Alice Glass is the debut extended play (EP) by Canadian singer and songwriter Alice Glass, released on 18 August 2017 through Loma Vista Recordings. [1] The EP marks Glass' first collection of solo material since her departure from electronic band Crystal Castles in 2014. [2]
The EP was written entirely by Glass, with additional writing and production by former Health member, Jupiter Keyes. Glass stated in an interview with Thump earlier in 2017 that some tracks "sound more like being eaten by fire ants" and others "are like being slowly consumed by a snake." She also stated that the most surprising thing about her new music is "that you can hear my voice clearly." [2]
Anna Gaca of Spin described the EP as "pained, distorted electro-pop," saying that "some of its more dissonant experimentation is reminiscent of Grimes, while the dark but upbeat "Forgiveness" and "Blood Oath" hark back to Glass's time with Crystal Castles." [3] Ondarock said the EP is a mixture of electropop and post-industrial music. [4] Dazed 's Selim Bulut said "the EP ranges from similarly explosive pop songs like the low-slung 4x4 groove of "Forgiveness" to eerie noise bangers like "Natural Selection" and the atmospheric "The Altar"." [5] April Clare Welsh of Fact said the EP has "a dark, industrial-tinged electro-pop sound." [6]
"Forgiveness" is about "being completely disillusioned by the things and people you've known." [7] "White Lies" is about "the lies people have to tell themselves to find comfort when they feel trapped being around someone that hurts them or other people. most people who remain in abusive relationships do so because they're constantly being lied to. So they learn to lie to themselves as a form of false protection." [8] "Blood Oath" is about "a teenage girl being preyed upon and taken advantage of by an older man." [9]
Alice later reflected on the EP's recording being rushed by her label. "I wish I’d had more time. I was kind of going along with what my new label said. They were like, ‘No press, and then you’re going to go on tour with Marilyn Manson, this is a great idea.’ So, yeah." She has expressed interest in re-doing songs from the EP. [10]
Glass surprise released the EP on 18 August 2017 after the release of the lead single "Without Love" on August 10, which was accompanied by a music video directed by Floria Sigismondi and produced by The Fader . [11] A music video directed by Lindsey Mann for the second single "Forgiveness" was released on 11 January 2018. [12] [13]
She headed on tour alongside Marilyn Manson in promotion of the EP. The tour kicked off in North America in September 2017. [14] Her tour that later included Zola Jesus and Pictureplane, as seen in backdrop visuals, was called "Suffer Lightning," pulling from the lyrics of Glass' debut single, "Stillbirth." [15]

Sasha Geffen of Pitchfork said "Alice Glass can feel more like an exorcism than an evolution, a digestion of past trauma rather than a new chapter. But processing this stuff takes years, and sometimes a six-song "fuck you" is exactly the catharsis you need to start anew." [17] Kevin Ritchie of Now Magazine wrote, "Whereas Crystal Castles often regards singers as just another instrument in the arsenal, melding shrieks and wails with walls of noise, Glass has turned the levels up on her vocals," finally stating that "none of these songs reach the anthemic highs (or blistering insanity) of Glass's biggest hits with Crystal Castles, but its balanced mood gives pointed new dimensions to her emotional intensity and shows she is just as compelling in gentle mode as she is going wild on stage." [16] Stereogum 's James Rettig called the EP "an abrasive but empowering listen that lets Glass brandish the captivating creative voice that drew us to her in the first place." [18]

Marilyn Manson is an American rock band formed by namesake lead singer Marilyn Manson and guitarist Daisy Berkowitz in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1989. Originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, they gained a local cult following in South Florida in the early 1990s with their theatrical live performances. In 1993, they were the first act signed to Trent Reznor's Nothing Records label. Until 1996, the name of each member was created by combining the first name of a female sex symbol and the last name of a serial killer—for example, Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. Their lineup has changed between many of their album releases; the eponymous lead singer is the only remaining original member.

Jeordie Osbourne White, better known Twiggy Ramirez or simply Twiggy, is an American musician, mostly known as the former bassist and guitarist of the rock band Marilyn Manson. Previously, he was the bassist for A Perfect Circle and a touring member of Nine Inch Nails, and is currently the vocalist for Goon Moon. He left Marilyn Manson in 2002, later rejoined the band in 2008, and was dismissed in 2017. He has been a principal songwriter for the band and has also contributed to some of the Desert Sessions recordings. He also hosted the Hour of Goon podcast with fellow musician Fred Sablan, on the Starburns Audio network.
Tyler Bates is an American musician, producer, and composer for film, television, and video game scores. Much of his work is in the action and horror film genres, with films like Dawn of the Dead, 300, Sucker Punch, Halloween and Halloween II and the John Wick franchise. He has collaborated with directors like Zack Snyder, Rob Zombie, Neil Marshall, William Friedkin, Scott Derrickson, James Gunn, Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. In addition, he is the former lead guitarist of the American rock band Marilyn Manson, and produced its albums The Pale Emperor and Heaven Upside Down. He is Jerry Cantrell's touring/studio member.

"Lunchbox" is a song by American rock band Marilyn Manson. It was released as the second single from their debut album, Portrait of an American Family (1994). A heavy metal song that features elements of death metal, industrial music and punk rock, "Lunchbox" was written by the band's eponymous vocalist, Daisy Berkowitz, and Gidget Gein, and produced by Manson with Trent Reznor. According to Berkowitz, the track was written as the frontman's plea to be left alone; it was also inspired by a time where Manson defended himself from bullies with a Kiss lunchbox. The track features elements of "Fire" (1968) performed by Arthur Brown, a musician who influenced the band.
Eat Me, Drink Me is the sixth studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson. It was released on June 5, 2007, by Interscope Records. It was recorded in a rented home studio in Hollywood by lead vocalist Marilyn Manson and guitarist and bassist Tim Sköld, and was produced by Manson and Sköld. It was the band's first album not to be recorded as a five-piece, as John 5 departed from the group in 2004. Instead of replacing 5, Tim Sköld remained with bass and played guitar, and the band continued as a four-piece. Manson has stated that he sang most of the album lying down on the studio floor with his hands cupping the studio microphone, resulting in a very distinctive vocal sound. Of Sköld's compositions, a further two are said to have been turned into fully-fledged songs with lyrics, music and vocals completed but were not put onto album for fear of making it overwrought.

Crystal Castles was a Canadian electronic music group formed in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, formed by songwriter-producer Ethan Kath and singer-songwriter Alice Glass, who later left and was replaced by Edith Frances. Crystal Castles were known for their chaotic live shows and lo-fi melancholic homemade productions. They released many limited vinyl singles between 2006 and 2007 before releasing four studio albums between 2008 and 2016.

Heaven Upside Down is the tenth studio album by American rock band Marilyn Manson. It was released on October 6, 2017, by Loma Vista Recordings and Caroline International. The record had the working title Say10 and was initially due to be issued on Valentine's Day. However, the release was delayed by numerous events, most notably the death of Marilyn Manson's father, Hugh Warner, who died during production and to whom the album was later dedicated. The record has many of the musicians who performed on the band's previous album, The Pale Emperor (2015), including the producer Tyler Bates and the drummer Gil Sharone. Despite Manson's early implications, long-time bass guitarist Twiggy Ramirez did not participate on the album. He left the group following a sexual assault allegation by a former girlfriend.

Prey//IV is the debut studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Alice Glass. It was released on 16 February 2022 by Eating Glass Records. It is her first collection of solo material since the release of her self-titled EP released five years prior. The album title and track listing were revealed on 19 November 2021. The release of the album was preceded by four singles, "Suffer and Swallow", "Baby Teeth", "Fair Game", and "Love Is Violence". To promote the album, Glass embarked on a 15-date tour of the United States, the Traumabond Tour, from the 7 September to 31 October, 2022.
