Kate Ryan is a Belgian singer and songwriter, and the winner of a World Music Award. She began her singing career in 2001 and later found fame with a string of dance hits. These included covers, mostly of Mylène Farmer and France Gall, such as "Désenchantée", "Libertine", and "Ella, elle l'a", and Desireless' "Voyage Voyage", as well as new material. Ryan represented Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with "Je t'adore" coming in 12th place in the semi-final.

It was the seventh song which was performed in this Contest and the 999th by counting all songs which have ever performed on Eurovision Song Contest. "Behind the Mask" is a pop song that has been recorded by artists including Yellow Magic Orchestra, Michael Jackson, and Eric Clapton. It began as an instrumental written by Ryuichi Sakamoto for a 1978 Seiko commercial; it was rerecorded by Sakamoto's band Yellow Magic Orchestra and released on their album Solid State Survivor (1979), with lyrics by Chris Mosdell.

It was eventually surprise-released digitally on December 11, 2020 through Adams's label PAX AM. Physical editions were released on March 19, 2021.
