Alliance Group Limited, a cooperative originally named Alliance Freezing Company (Southland) Limited, operates freezing works at seven sites in New Zealand and exports grass-fed meat and by-products to Europe, North America, as well as Asia including China, India, Korea and Japan and many other countries. [1] Alliance employs almost 5,000 people across New Zealand and operates two processing plants in the North Island and five in the South Island.

David Surveyor has since January 2015 been the chief executive officer, succeeding Grant Cuff. [4] Murray Taggart has been chairman of the board of directors since 1 October 2013. [5]

History

Alliance Freezing Company (Southland) Limited was founded by local farmers in Invercargill in 1948. [6] Their first large freezing works was opened in 1980 at Lorneville on the outskirts of Invercargill.

From its base in Invercargill Alliance runs freezing works nearby in Southland at Lorneville and Mataura, further away at Pukeuri in Otago, Timaru in South Canterbury, and at Nelson. There are two freezing works in the North Island at Dannevirke and Levin. [7] A new $15.9 million venison plant opened at Lorneville in December 2018.

Always a business belonging to farmers Alliance's ownership model was changed in 1960 to a cooperative. The farmers who supply the livestock to be killed are the company's shareholders. The name of the cooperative was changed to Alliance Group Limited in 1990. [6]

Alliance Group bought their first North Island freezing works at Dannevirke in 2003. They added a second North Island works at Levin in 2008. [6]

On 27 September 2024, the Alliance Group proposed closing down its Timaru Alliance Smithfield meatworks plant, which would affect about 600 jobs. The consultation period will last until 11 October, with a decision expected to be made on 18 October 2024. [8] On 18 October, the Alliance Group confirmed that it would close down its Smithfield meat processing plant in December 2024, citing declining sheep processing numbers caused by land use changes. [9]

Mataura is a town in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand. Mataura has a meat processing plant, and until 2000 it was the site of a large pulp and paper mill.

Dacre is a small town in the South Island of New Zealand. It is situated on the Southland Plains between Invercargill and Edendale on State Highway 1. In Dacre, SH 1 is met by State Highway 98, which runs west to Makarewa via Rakahouka. Nearby villages include Mabel Bush to the northwest and Woodlands to the southeast. Dacre is 25 km north east of Invercargill, the closest city. The Main South Line railway passes just to the south of Dacre. It is a dairy farming community, that currently has a community hall and a small engine garage.

The South Island Limited was a passenger express train operated by the New Zealand Railways Department (NZR) between 1949 and 1970. It operated over the almost 590 kilometres (370 mi) route between Christchurch and Invercargill. It was replaced by the Southerner.

Lorneville is a small settlement on the northern outskirts of Invercargill, in Southland, New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 6, at the junction with State Highways 98 and 99, and is thus also on the Southern Scenic Route.

Rosa Olga Sansom was a New Zealand teacher, museum director, botanist, broadcaster and writer. She was a curator at Southland Museum and became the director of that museum in 1953. She was a founding member of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand. In 1979, she was awarded the Queens Service Medal.

Southland is New Zealand's southernmost region. It consists of the southwestern portion of the South Island and includes Stewart Island. Southland is bordered by the culturally similar Otago Region to the north and east, and the West Coast Region in the extreme northwest. New Zealand Refrigerating Company Limited founded 1881 by a committee led by John Roberts killed New Zealand livestock at its Burnside Works built in 1883 in Green Island Dunedin, froze the carcasses and shipped them for wholesaling in Smithfield, London.

Manufacturing in New Zealand contributed $23 billion (12%) of the country's gross domestic product and directly employed 241,000 people in 2017, while manufactured goods made up 52% of the country's exports by value. The food and beverage subsector alone contributed 32% of manufacturing's GDP and 71% of exports.

Groundswell NZ is a farming advocacy group in New Zealand that was formed to oppose the New Zealand Government's National Policy Statement on Freshwater. The group has also sought to oppose or revise freshwater, indigenous biodiversity, climate change, pastoral land reform policies, and the Three Waters reform programme affecting farmers and rural communities On 16 July 2021, Groundswell NZ staged a nationwide Howl of a Protest campaign in between 47 and 57 cities and towns throughout New Zealand to protest what they regarded as "increasing Government interference, unworkable regulations, and unjustified costs" on the rural sector. On 21 November 2021, Groundswell NZ held a second series of nationwide protests known as the Mother of All Protests.

H. W. Richardson Group is a New Zealand company that provides fuel distribution and retailing through its Allied Petroleum brand in New Zealand and its Petrogas brand in Victoria, Australia. It also owns companies in the concrete, transport, contracting, aggregate quarrying, and waste disposal sectors, operating predominantly in the South Island.

Invercargill Central is a shopping centre located in the central business district of Invercargill, New Zealand. Stage one of the project opened on 14 July 2022.The BusSmart Hub is outside Invercargill Central. All stores on the ground floor are open.
