Ambarish Rai was an Indian Right to Education activist. He was the founder and national convener of the Right To Education (RTE) Forum, the largest civil society platform on education in India. [1] [2]
Rai was a law graduate from University of Lucknow. [3] During his university time, he was elected as general secretary of All India Students’ Federation, a student organization. [4]
As a student, Rai protested against the dual system of education in India. [2] He was involved in activism with AISF and Communist Party of India (CPI) in UP and later worked as a member of CPI(ML)'s UP State Committee. He worked with the Indian People's Front and All India Central Council of Trade Unions in the 1990s. [5] He was appointed the national organizer for National Alliance for the Fundamental Right to Education (NAFRE) and later joined the People's Campaign for Common School System (PCCSS) in 2005. [6] [4] As part of the organizations, he played an instrumental role in increasing the demand for education to be made a fundamental right, leading to the 86th constitutional amendment aimed to "provide free and compulsory education of all children in the age group of six to fourteen years" as a Fundamental Right and the legislation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. [6] [4] [7] Rai mobilized Tribals in Gujarat and Maharashtra for a movement leading to the enactment of Forest Rights Act, 2006 and was the president of Lok Sangharsh Morcha. [6] [8] In 2010, he formed the RTE Forum — a coalition of 10,000 educators, nonprofits, teachers’ unions, networks and community members — a platform aiming to achieve full realization of the Right to Education Act. [3] [9] In 2018, he was chosen as a Malala Fund Education Champion and worked towards advancing girls' education in the country. [1] Contrary to increasing privatization efforts, Rai advocated an increase in allocation for education in the budget. He was a supporter of the no detention policy and felt that students cannot be blamed for systemic failures. [10] [11]
Rai died on 23 April 2021 in Delhi with Covid-like symptoms and was a victim of Oxygen shortage. [5] [10] [11]

The Right to Information (RTI) is an act of the Parliament of India which sets out the rules and procedures regarding citizens' right to information. It replaced the former Freedom of Information Act, 2002. Under the provisions of RTI Act, any citizen of India may request information from a "public authority" which is required to reply expeditiously or within thirty days. In case of matter involving a petitioner's life and liberty, the information has to be provided within 48 hours. The Act also requires every public authority to computerize their records for wide dissemination and to proactively publish certain categories of information so that the citizens need minimum recourse to request for information formally.
The right to education has been recognized as a human right in a number of international conventions, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights which recognizes a right to free, compulsory primary education for all, an obligation to develop secondary education accessible to all with the progressive introduction of free secondary education, as well as an obligation to develop equitable access to higher education, ideally by the progressive introduction of free higher education. In 2021, 171 states were parties to the Covenant.
Pinarayi Vijayan is an Indian politician who is the current Chief Minister of Kerala, serving since 25 May 2016. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act or Right to Education Act (RTE) is an Act of the Parliament of India enacted on 4 August 2009, which describes the modalities of the importance of free and compulsory education for children between the age of 6 to 14 years in India under Article 21A of the Indian Constitution. India became one of 135 countries to make education a fundamental right of every child when the act came into force on 1 April 2010. The title of the RTE Act incorporates the words ‘free and compulsory’. ‘Free education’ means that no child, other than a child who has been admitted by his or her parents to a school which is not supported by the appropriate Government, shall be liable to pay any kind of fee or charges or expenses which may prevent him or her from pursuing and completing elementary education. ‘Compulsory education’ casts an obligation on the appropriate Government and local authorities to provide and ensure admission, attendance and completion of elementary education by all children in the 6-14 age group. With this, India has moved forward to a rights based framework that casts a legal obligation on the Central and State Governments to implement this fundamental child right as enshrined in the Article 21A of the Constitution, in accordance with the provisions of the RTE Act.17.

Anita Kaul was an Indian Administrative Service officer best known for her contributions to the Indian education sector. She was a defining voice of the Right to Education movement and one of the principal architects of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 which made education a fundamental right for every child in India. She is also well-known for her role in expanding the Nali Kali approach to primary schools in India. Heralded as one of Karnataka's most 'successful, innovative and revolutionary' reform programs, the pedagogic innovations of Nali Kali during Anita Kaul's tenure have been described as 'little short of a renaissance' in Indian education.

Malala Fund is an international, non-profit organization that advocates for girls' education. It was co-founded by Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate, and her father, Ziauddin. The stated goal of the organization is to ensure 12 years of free, safe and quality education for every girl. As of July 2020, the organization has 48 staff and supports 58 advocates working across Afghanistan, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
Anil Sadgopal is an Indian educationist and activist, known for the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme and for advocacy related to the Right to Education (RTE) Act. He is a recipient of several awards and honours, including the Jamnalal Bajaj Award for 'Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development'. He was instrumental in setting up Eklavya foundation in 1982. For over a decade, he was Professor of Education at Delhi University, and headed its Department of Education during 1998-2001. Since 2004-2005, he has been campaigning for changes in the RTE Act, which he believes is flawed.
V. P. Sanu is an Indian politician who is currently the National President of the SFI, the students' wing of the CPIM. He is also a member of the Kerala state committee of the CPI(M). He contested the parliamentary election in 2019 polls and 2021 by-polls representing CPI(M) in Malappuram, Kerala against IUML and lost both times in big margin.
