Nicholas Amechi Akwanya, FNAL is a Nigerian retired professor,priest,poet and a novelist. He was a former dean of Postgraduate studies of the University of Nigeria,Nsukka and a former head of department of English and Literary Studies of the institution. He is a fellow of Nigeria Academy of Letters. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Akwanya was born on 6 December 1952 in Awkuzu,Oyi LGA of Anambra State. He attended his primary education in Akwuzu and he moved to Hallows Seminary,Onitsha. However,during the civil war (1967–1970) Onitsha was taken by the federal forces,the school was moved to Awka-Etiti near Nnewi,and then Ukpor,south of Nnewi. In 1972 he began his philosophy studies in Bigard Memorial Major Seminary,Enugu. He later proceeded to Theology in 1976 and finished in 1980 with Priestly Ordination. In 1982 he was given an admission in the National University of Ireland where he bagged double Honours degree in English and Geography. He later obtained his master's degree in English in (1986),and finished his PhD in 1989 with a thesis entitled Structuring and Meaning in the Nigerian Novel. [5] [1] [2]
In 2022 there are two published Festschrifts on Akwanya which include Literature and Literary Criticism in Nigeria:Essays on the Works of A.N. Akwanya edited by Mary JanePatrick N. Okolie &Ogochukwu Ukwueze,Shadows of Interstitial Life:Essays on African Literature in Honour of Rev. Fr. Professor Amechi N. Akwanya edited by Ignatius Chukwuma and Martin Okwoli Ogba. [6] [7]
In 1985,Akwanya was employed by the Department of English,St Patrick's College,Maynooth,Ireland as a graduate Assistant. However,he resigned and enrolled for his PhD in 1986. Upon the completion of his programme,he returned to Nigeria and took his first academic appointment as a lecturer II at the Department of English,University of Nigeria,Nsukka in 1991. In 1994 he became Lecturer I and in 1996,he was promoted to a Senior Lecturer. In 1999,he became a full professor. [1] [2]
On February 28,2007,he delivered the Seventeenth Inaugural Lecture of the University of Nigeria entitled,"English Language Learning in Nigeria:In Search of an Enabling Principle" It was later serialised in weekly installments in the Daily Champion newspaper pages 19,58 and 89 of March 21,2007 to May 2,2007. He also delivered the 4th Valedictory Lecture of the University of Nigeria on December 1,2022,entitled,"No Longer a Tribe:Chinua Achebe,the Novel,and Optimistic Postcoloniality". [1] [2] [8] He retired from the University of Nigeria on 6 December 2022 and tn March 17,2023,he was appointed Vicar General,Diocese of Aguleri. [8] [2] [1]
Akwanya was the Head of Department of English &Literary Studies,University of Nigeria from 2002 to 2005 and 2011–2013. From 2009 - 2011,he was appointed as the Dean of School of Postgraduate Studies and he was made an acting Vice-Chancellor,University of Nigeria,Nsukka, from 19 to 21 October 2009. [1] [2]
Akwanya served as consulting editor to Nsukka Journal of the Humanities in 2018;A Journal of Language and Literature (AJOLL) in 2017;IBADAN Journal of English Studies (IBJES);Africa and world Literature in 2007,and,JONASS:Journal of the Nigerian Association for Semiotic Studies in the same year. In 1992,Ossie Enekwe invited Amechi Akwanya to become assistant editor of Okike:An African Journal of New Writing (which was earlier founded by Prof. Chinua Achebe in 1971 and later handed over to Enekwe in 1984). When Enekwe retired in 2010,he handed over the editorship of Okike to Akwanya. There have been more than thirteen issues of the Journal since then. [9] [10]
In 2004,he was awarded the Most Dedicated Staff Award of the University of Nigeria,Nsukka and the Most Innovative Head of Department Award,by English Students Association. In 2007,he was listed in The Nigerian Book of Great People. [3] [1]
Akwanya research focuses on discourse theory or discourse studies,literary theory and criticism,study of language,African &European literatures and semantics. [4] His research contribution in literary studies stems from functionalism and axiomatic functionalist linguistics as sketched out by Sandor W.F. Mulder by focusing on literary theory and literary discourse analysis. This came to light with his 1996 edition of his Semantics and Discourse:Theories of Meaning and Textual Analysis. He also elaborated a theory of literary discourse analysis based on AndréMartinet’s notion that ‘function is the criterion of linguistic reality’to the effect that the function that determines literature is art. He is a Fellow of the institute of Industrial Administration (FIIA). In 2012,he became an Honorary Fellow,Institute of Certified Professional Managers of Nigeria. In the same year,he became a Fellow of the International Academy of Management. In 2015,he became a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (FNAL) and in 2022 he was made Papal Chamberlain,an entitled Monsignor. [3] [1]
Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist,poet,and critic who is regarded as a central figure of modern African literature. His first novel and magnum opus,Things Fall Apart (1958),occupies a pivotal place in African literature and remains the most widely studied,translated,and read African novel. Along with Things Fall Apart,his No Longer at Ease (1960) and Arrow of God (1964) complete the "African Trilogy". Later novels include A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987). In the West,Achebe is often referred to as the "father of African literature",although he vigorously rejected the characterization.
Things Fall Apart is the debut novel of Nigerian author Chinua Achebe,first published in 1958. It depicts pre-colonial life in Igboland and the subsequent appearance of European missionaries and colonial forces in the late 19th century. It is seen as the archetypal modern African novel in English,and one of the first to receive global critical acclaim. It is a staple book in schools throughout Africa and is widely read and studied in English-speaking countries around the world. The novel was first published in the United Kingdom in 1958 by William Heinemann Ltd,and became the first work published in Heinemann's African Writers Series.

Christopher Ifekandu Okigbo was a Nigerian poet,teacher,and librarian,who died fighting for the independence of Biafra. He is today widely acknowledged as an outstanding postcolonial English-language African poet and one of the major modernist writers of the 20th century.

Vincent Chukwuemeka Ike OFR,NNOM was a Nigerian monarch,academic and writer known for a mixture of lampoon,humour and satire. He owed a little bit of his style to his Igbo cultural upbringing. He studied history,English and Religious Studies at the University of Ibadan and earned a master's degree at Stanford University. Aloysius Orjinta is a Nigerian Roman Catholic priest and senior lecturer in the University of Nigeria,Nsukka. He was ordained a priest in 1990. A holder of two doctorates in French Studies and in German Studies and Political Science,with specialty in International Relations,he is a former Head of Department of Foreign Languages and Literary Studies in the university. He has studied and worked in Italy,Germany,France,and in Nigeria where he currently lives. He attended Urban University,Rome,the University of Saarland,Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich,University of Grenoble,and the University of Ibadan in addition to his current workplace where he was an undergraduate. A researcher and critic,his academic publications and interest cover religious writings on Christianity and Islam,gender and feminist studies,political discourse,and Euro-African literature with emphasis on German,Francophone and Anglophone works. He is a member of,and has served on,the managing boards of many organisations in Nigeria and outside the country,most times as the head. Currently,he is the editor of Interdisciplinary Academic Essays,Elite University Journal,Munchen,Germany,as well as of the Nsukka Journal of Humanities,Nsukka,Nigeria. He is also an editorial board member and reviewer of the Asian Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities,Hong Kong.
Christian Anieke is a Nigerian Roman Catholic priest and the founding Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University,Enugu,Nigeria. Ordained a priest in 2000,he is a professor of English Language and Studies. From 2006 to 2009,he was Provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education. He became the Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University,which is owned by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu in Nigeria,in 2009. He is also the director of the university's Institute of Chinua Achebe Studies.

Nancy Ekwulira Achebe is a Nigerian professor of library and information science. She served as the University Orator at Anambra State University from 2012 to 2017 and is currently the Commissioner for the Anambra State Ministry of Education and the Secretary,Anambra State Education Advisory Board.
Emeka Patrick Nwabueze is the first Emeritus Professor of Theatre and Film Studies of the University of Nigeria,Nsukka. He is also a former dean of Faculty of Arts and ex- director of African studies of the institution.
Ossie Enekwe,born Onuora Osmond Enekwechi,was a Nigerian dramatist,poet,novelist,and professor of Theatre Arts. A former vice president of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) as well as the former director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Nigeria,Nsukka (1998–2004). He helped to establish the University of Nigeria's Dramatic Arts Department. Enekwe was the editor of Okike:The African Journal of New Writing from 1984 to 2010,after being appointed by its founder,Chinua Achebe,who founded it in 1971. When Ossie Enekwe retired in 2010,he handed over the editorship of Okike to Amechi Akwanya.
Florence Onyebuchi Orabueze is a poet,writer and a Nigerian professor of English and literary studies. She was a former director of the Institute of African studies of the institution,the founder of the Grace Uzoma Okonkwo Foundation and a member of Nigerian Academy of Letters.
Cheta Igbokwe is a Nigerian playwright,poet,and author. His play Homecoming won the 2021 Association of Nigerian Authors' (ANA) Prize for Drama and was nominated for the 2023 Nigeria Prize for Literature.
