The American Society of Hispanic Economists (ASHE) is a professional association of economists in the United States that promotes the representation of Hispanic Americans within the economics profession and supports economic research relevant to Hispanic Americans. ASHE is recognized by the American Economic Association as one of the academic organizations comprising the Allied Social Sciencs Associations.

Major activities

ASHE organizes sessions at academic conferences, including the annual meetings of the Allied Social Science Associations, the Southern Economic Association, and the Western Economic Association International. ASHE has also co-sponsored and co-organized a series of national conferences, including the 2010 and 2014 Hispanic Economic Issues conferences with the Americas Center of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, [1] [2] the 2011 Hispanic Economic Experience conference with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, [3] and the annual Freedom and Justice conferences with the National Economic Association, starting in 2014. [4] Moreover, ASHE co-hosted the annual Economic Issues Affecting Hispanic and African American Communities conferences with the Department of Economics at Texas A&M University between 2007 and 2019. [5]

During her presidency, Marie T. Mora founded the ASHE awards, including the biennial Academic Achievement Award (inaugurated in 2008) to recognize the impact of members on research/scholarship, and the biennial Outstanding Service Awards (inaugurated in 2009) to recognize the impact of the non-board members on ASHE by individuals as well as institutions and organizations. The ASHE Academic Achievement Awards are presented in even-numbered years at the annual business meeting (held at the ASSA annual meetings); the Outstanding Service Awards are presented in odd-numbered years. Mora also founded the ASHE Dissertation Fellowships (inaugurated in 2008) for Ph.D. students.

In conjunction with the American Economic Association's Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession and the National Economic Association, ASHE publishes an annual newsletter called The Minority Report. [6]

Starting in 2009, ASHE's Hispanic Economic Outlook Committee (which was co-founded by Marie T. Mora, Mark Hugo Lopez, and Alberto Davila in 2008) began disseminating the Hispanic Economic Outlook reports. These reports are available at the ASHE website, [7] and selected issues can be accessed at the Social Science Research Network website.

ASHE was founded in January 2002 during the 2002 AEA/ASSA annual meeting in Atlanta, GA, over a dinner meeting of Hispanic and Latino/a economists organized by Joseph Guzman and Sue Stockly, sponsored by the RAND Corporation. The founding members included the following.

Ben Shalom Bernanke is an American economist who served as the 14th chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014. After leaving the Fed, he was appointed a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution. During his tenure as chairman, Bernanke oversaw the Federal Reserve's response to the late-2000s financial crisis, for which he was named the 2009 Time Person of the Year. Before becoming Federal Reserve chairman, Bernanke was a tenured professor at Princeton University and chaired the department of economics there from 1996 to September 2002, when he went on public service leave. Bernanke was awarded the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, jointly with Douglas Diamond and Philip H. The Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) is a group of academic and professional organizations that are officially recognized by the American Economic Association (AEA) and are related to the study of social sciences. James Brian Bullard is the chief executive officer and 12th president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, positions he has held since 2008. The National Association for Business Economics (NABE) is the largest international association of applied economists, strategists, academics, and policy-makers committed to the application of economics. Founded in 1959, it is one of the member organizations of the Allied Social Science Associations. According to the association's website, "NABE's mission is to provide leadership in the use and understanding of economics.".

Jerry L. Jordan is a former member of President Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers and former president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

Adela de la Torre is an American professor and university administrator. She has served as the ninth president of San Diego State University in San Diego, California since 2018. She is the first woman to serve in the role.

Thomas MacGillivray Humphrey is an American economist. Until 2005 he was a research advisor and senior economist in the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and editor of the Bank's flagship publication, the Economic Quarterly. His publications cover macroeconomics, monetary economics, and the history of economic thought. Mark Blaug called him the "undisputed master" of British classical monetary thought.

Havidán Rodríguez is an American sociologist and university administrator. He is currently the president of the University at Albany, SUNY. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Raphael W. Bostic is an American economist, academic, and public servant who is the 15th President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. During his academic career, Bostic served as chair of the Department of Governance, Management, and the Policy Process at the Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California.

Mark Hugo Lopez is Director of Hispanic Research at the Pew Research Center. Lopez has authored and co-authored numerous reports on the attitudes and opinions of Hispanics, education, migration and immigration, identity, and civic engagement and voter participation. Lopez also coordinates the Center's National Survey of Latinos.

Lisa DeNell Cook is an American economist who has served as a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors since May 23, 2022. She is the first African American woman and first woman of color to sit on the Board. Cook previously was a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State University and a member of the American Economic Association's Executive Committee. An authority on international economics, especially on the Russian economy, she has been involved in advising policymakers from the Obama Administration to the Nigerian and Rwandan governments. In 2022, Cook was elected to the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Mary Colleen Daly is an American economist, who became the 13th President and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco on October 1, 2018. She serves on the Federal Reserve's rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee on a rotating basis. Previously, Daly was the Executive Vice President and Director of Research of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, which she joined as an economist in 1996.

Marie T. Mora is an American economist who currently acts as administrator in the Office of Faculty Success & Diversity as well as Professor of Economics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). She was also a former tenured faculty member at New Mexico State University.

Refugio I. Rochin is an American professor emeritus in agricultural and resource economics and Chicana/o studies at the University of California, Davis, director emeritus at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and instructor at Pennsylvania State University World Campus. He is an expert on rural Latinas/os and Latina/o Studies.

Catalina Amuedo-Dorantes is a Spanish economist, a Professor in the Economics and Business Management faculty at the University of California, Merced and a Professor and Department Chair at San Diego State University. Since 2015, she has been the Western Representative for a standing committee called the Committee for the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP). Her field of work focuses on the fundamentals of labour economics and international migration, particularly the nature of immigration policies and its impact on migrant's assimilation into the community at a state and local level. Amuedo-Dorantes has published multiple articles in refereed journals including Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Population Economics, International Migration, and Journal of Development Economics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sadie Collective</span> Washington D.C.-based organization

The Sadie Collective is the first American non-profit organization which aims to increase the representation of African-American women in economics and related fields. It was founded by Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman and Fanta Traore in August 2018 and is named for the first African-American economist, Sadie T. M. Alexander.

The National Economic Association (NEA) is a learned society established in 1969, focused on initiatives in the field of economics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kathleen Bell Cooper</span> Corporate economist and former governmental economist

Dr. Kathleen Marie Bell Cooper is a corporate economist and former governmental economist who has worked for companies such as ExxonMobil and Security Pacific National Bank as well as being in leadership for such groups as the National Association of Business Economists. She is currently a director for the Williams Companies. She was the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the United States Department of Commerce during part of George W. Bush's presidency.
