The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes the profession of interior design. It has chapters throughout the United States and Canada. Throughout all of the associations of ASID within the United States and Canada there are many sections within the American Society of Interior Designers, typically in all different states or areas. Each area typically has a certain number of members and they all work together on making Interior Design a better place and to help other Interior Designers within the organization. All of these sections are incorporated in typical and beneficial ways to make the organization a better environment for everyone. In ASID, interior designers will all come together and work together as a team. Some of the most important parts of ASID and being involved are the extended History, being a member and what kind of benefits a person shall get as being part of this organization, learning the policies, some issues that can be come across, and what the foundation is all about. To be a member is it good to be qualified as a professional or student interior designer. [1]
In 1931, the first national professional organization for decorators, the American Institute of Interior Decorators (AIID), was founded. The organization changed its name to the American Institute of Decorators (AID) in 1936, and to the American Institute of Interior Designers (also known as AID) in 1961. [2] Meanwhile, in 1957, the New York Chapter of the AID changed its name to the National Society for Interior Designers (NSID), emphasizing the title of Interior Designer rather than Decorator. [3] By 1975, there were many clubs and organizations for decorators and interior designers around the country. AID and NSID were the two largest, and they merged to form the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID). [4]
ASID is the largest professional organization for interior designers. [5] ASID members include approximately 13,500 practicing interior designers in both commercial and residential sectors, 5,500 student members, and 6,000 representatives of ASID Industry Partner firms. [6] ASID has Student chapters at colleges, universities and design schools with 2-year and 4-year programs throughout the U.S.
Members are qualified by education, experience and examination, and adhere to a strict code of ethics and professional conduct. [7] Through educational programs, research, seminars and conferences, ASID members receive the most current information on developments in design, as well as appropriate materials, technology, building codes, government regulations, flammability standards, sustainable and green design, product performance, design psychology, occupant populations, and more. ASID also supports legislative and advocacy efforts to protect interior designers’ right to practice.

ASID has six membership categories [8]
Professional Membership: the highest level of ASID membership. They have completed a course of accredited education and equivalent work experience in interior design and have successfully passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.
Allied Membership: Eligible individuals are practicing interior designers who have completed 40 semester or 60 quarter credit hours in interior design education from an accredited institution (university, college or technical school). Continuing education coursework/hours do not count toward meeting the education requirement for membership.
Educator Membership: This level is for educators who are actively engaged as department chairs or full-time instructors in a post-secondary program of interior design education at any university or accredited school of interior design that requires completion of 40 semester credit hours in interior design-related courses. Eligible educators receive a discounted dues rate as allied or professional members, depending on their qualifications.
Student Advancement Membership:
Student Members: Student members prepare for their career by joining the ASID network. Membership is available to students currently enrolled in an interior design program of at least 40 credit hours or 60 quarter credit hours of interior design coursework to graduate.
Industry Partner Membership: Industry Partners join ASID to gain access to the designer and student community. Members include interior design industry manufacturers and their representatives, related trade associations and market centers.
All ASID members have the opportunity to be involved with a local chapter.
ASID revised their legislative policy in January 2009. The policy was revised to best serve the societies membership and goals. The legislative policy of the organization is as follows:
ASID's multiyear effort to expand registered interior designers’ practice rights across the U.S. has been successful in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Illinois. [17] These bills extend interior design capabilities and allow practitioners to actively engage in fostering safe environments with their understanding of safety codes. [18]
ASID has embraced two platform issues: sustainable design and designing for an aging population.
Created in 1975, the nonprofit organization, and now known as the ASID Foundation, the Foundation is the affiliated 501 (c)(3) charitable organization for ASID. The ASID Foundation's mission is to support endeavors that capture and disseminate knowledge, encourage innovation, and benefit the health, safety and welfare of the public through interior design research, scholarship and education. ASID is big on collaborating with others to make the world easier to navigate through, so, Interior Designers have a strong understanding that the design they provide, can change a person's life. Professional certification, trade certification, or professional designation, often called simply certification or qualification, is a designation earned by a person to assure qualification to perform a job or task. Not all certifications that use post-nominal letters are an acknowledgement of educational achievement, or an agency appointed to safeguard the public interest.

It involves the systematic design and general engineering of various structures for construction and human use, investigation of existing social, ecological, and soil conditions and processes in the landscape, and the design of other interventions that will produce desired outcomes.
The American Bar Association (ABA) is a voluntary bar association of lawyers and law students; it is not specific to any jurisdiction in the United States. Founded in 1878, the ABA's stated activities are the setting of academic standards for law schools, and the formulation of model ethical codes related to the legal profession. As of fiscal year 2017, the ABA had 194,000 dues-paying members, constituting approximately 14.4% of American attorneys. In 1979, half of all lawyers in the U.S. were members of the ABA. An interior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such enhancement projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development, space planning, site inspections, programming, research, communicating with the stakeholders of a project, construction management, and execution of the design.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is an American professional association that, in its own words, "promotes the art, science, and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe" via "continuing education, training and professional development, codes and standards, research, conferences and publications, government relations, and other forms of outreach." ASME is thus an engineering society, a standards organization, a research and development organization, an advocacy organization, a provider of training and education, and a nonprofit organization. Founded as an engineering society focused on mechanical engineering in North America, ASME is today multidisciplinary and global.
A continuing education unit (CEU) or continuing education credit (CEC) is a measure used in continuing education programs to assist the professional to maintain their license in their profession. Continuing education or professional development is required in many fields, including teachers, insurance professionals, interior designers/interior architects, lighting designers, architects, engineers, emergency management professionals, school administrators, educators, nurses as well as those in the mental health professionals including psychologists and social workers. The continuing education unit is described as ten hours of participation in an education program.

Harrington College of Design (1931–2015) was a for-profit college in the Loop area of Chicago, Illinois, USA, that closed in 2015. It offered students programs leading to either a master's, bachelor's or associate's degree upon completion of the interior design, digital photography or communication design programs. Each program was credentialed with multiple levels of accreditation. The college was owned by Career Education Corporation.

The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture (UTSOA) is a college within The University of Texas at Austin, with its major facilities located on the main university campus in Austin, Texas. UTSOA's dean is Michelle Addington. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) is an American nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the appreciation and practice of traditional architecture and its allied arts by engaging with educators, professionals, students, and enthusiasts. It does so through education, publication, awards, and advocacy. The institute was formed in 2002 with the merger of two nonprofit organizations: The Institute of Classical Architecture, and Classical America.
The Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ) is independent of state and provincial credentialing bodies and provides the North American public with means to identify interior designers who have demonstrated the minimum level of competence needed to practice interior design. In fulfillment of this purpose, CIDQ provides a professional examination in interior design. The majority of the examination covers those aspects of the practice of interior design that affect the public's health, life style and welfare.

Nancy Vincent McClelland (1877–1959) was the first female president of the first US national association of interior designers, the American Institute of Interior Decorators (A.I.D), which is now called the American Society of Interior Designers (A.S.I.D.) and was one of an early group of female interior decorators practicing during the first decades of the 20th century. McClelland was also an expert on the European/American antiques. She was a writer for interior journals such as: Collier's, Country Life, House Beautiful, and House and Garden. She was an expert on wallpaper and the Scottish furniture designer Duncan Phyfe of New York. She received several rewards for her work. Being multilingual gave her the opportunity to be internationally active and to be known beyond the US as a writer, speaker, interior decorator, wallpaper designer, and collector of antique furniture. She traveled widely and met figures of the time such as Picasso.
New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) is a private college focused exclusively on interior design and located in New York City. The college offers certificate, three undergraduate, and four master's degree programs.
