Since the early 1970s, Brittany has experienced a tremendous revival of its folk music. Along with flourishing traditional forms such as the bombard-binou pair and fest-noz ensembles incorporating other additional instruments, it has also branched out into numerous subgenres.
Celtic Woman is an all-female Irish musical ensemble conceived and created by David Kavanagh, Sharon Browne and David Downes, a former musical director of the Irish stage show Riverdance. In 2004, Downes recruited five Irish female musicians who had not previously performed together, vocalists Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Lisa Kelly and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and fiddler Máiréad Nesbitt, as the first lineup of the group that he named "Celtic Woman". Downes chose a repertoire that ranged from traditional Celtic tunes to modern songs.

The show was filmed outside Slane Castle in County Meath, Ireland on 23 and 24 August 2006, and introduced Hayley Westenra, who would vary performing with other members on tour legs when necessary, as a new addition to the group. The album and concert were both released on 30 January 2007, the former of which broke a long-standing record when it surpassed the eighty-one-week chart run of the original Celtic Woman album.

The album features vocalists Lisa Lambe, Susan McFadden and Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, and violinist Mairead Nesbitt. In contrast to the Celtic Woman: Home for Christmas album, O Christmas Tree does not feature vocalist Chloë Agnew.
