Anapurus is a municipality in the state of Maranhão in the Northeast region of Brazil. [1] [2] [3] [4]

The average state in Brazil has 214 municipalities. Roraima is the least subdivided state, with 15 municipalities, while Minas Gerais is the most subdivided state, with 853.

Maranhão is a northeastern state of Brazil. To the north lies the Atlantic Ocean. Maranhão is neighboured by the states of Piauí, Tocantins and Pará. The people of Maranhão have a distinctive accent inside the common Northeastern Brazilian dialect. Maranhão is described in books such as The Land of the Palm Trees by Gonçalves Dias and Casa de Pensão by Aluísio Azevedo.

In February 2012, debris from an Ariane 4 rocket, originally launched in 1997, fell out of orbit and landed in Anapurus. [5]

The Ariane 4 was an expendable launch system, designed by the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) while being manufactured by ArianeGroup and marketed by Arianespace. Since its first flight on 15 June 1988 until the final flight, which was performed on 15 February 2003, it attained 113 successful launches out of 116 launches to have been conducted.
