The Anderson Street Conservation Park is a protected conservation park in Manunda, Cairns, Queensland, Australia.^[1] It is managed by the Cairns Regional Council.^[2]

State parks are parks or other protected areas managed at the sub-national level within those nations which use "state" as a political subdivision. State parks are typically established by a state to preserve a location on account of its natural beauty, historic interest, or recreational potential. There are state parks under the administration of the government of each U.S. state, some of the Mexican states, and in Brazil. The term is also used in the Australian state of Victoria. The equivalent term used in Canada, Argentina, South Africa and Belgium, is provincial park. Similar systems of local government maintained parks exist in other countries, but the terminology varies.

In Australia a conservation park is a type of specially protected status for land held by the Crown for conservation purposes. A conservation park may consist of multiple conservation units. As of June 2014, the term ‘Conservation Park’ is used only by the relevant government agencies in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

History

The Anderson Street park was gazetted as an environmental park in 1976. In 1994 it became a conservation park under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.^[2]

The Nature Conservation Act 1992 is an act of the Parliament of Queensland, Australia, that provides for the legislative protection of Queensland's threatened biota.

Protected biota

The park contains an area of endangered Melaleuca leucadendra open forest and a population of vulnerable spectacled flying-fox ( Pteropus conspicillatus ).^[2]

Melaleuca leucadendra, commonly known as weeping paperbark, long-leaved paperbark or white paperbark is a plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae and is widespread in northern Australia, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and the Torres Strait Islands. It is a tree, sometimes growing to more than 20 m (70 ft) with a trunk covered with thick, white, papery bark and weeping thinner branches. It has a long flowering season, can flower at almost any time of the year and is often grown as a tree in parks and on roadsides. It was the first melaleuca to be described and was described from a specimen growing in Indonesia.
