Andrew Winch is an internationally known [1] [2] English yacht designer based in Barnes, London. [3] He has been selected as one of two design teams for business jet interior development of the Boeing 787.

Aircraft design experience

Lufthansa Technik is a Hamburg, Germany–based subsidiary of Lufthansa [2] that has been tasked to design the Boeing 787 into a business jet. Boeing has announced one 787-8 order and three 787-9 orders in the business jet segment. [7] Around 2001, Winch was first commissioned to work with the firm to convert a client's Boeing BBJ. [8]

787 design specifics

The LHT/Winch design has a forward lounge (certified for 12 people) which incorporates a 50 inch plasma screen on the forward bulkhead. Aft from the forward lounge are two guest cabins, to right and left. An additional VIP suite is planned. Upon entering the main number 3 door, there is a highly visible dining and conference room is intended to be a prime feature of the design. There is an integrated movie theater, which is also designed as a second social seating area. Further aft is a VIP suite with a full width master stateroom. [10]

Custom design for Roman Abramovich

He designed a private Boeing 767-33A/ER, registered in Aruba as P4-MES for Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. It is known as The Bandit [11] due to its livery. Originally the aircraft was ordered by Hawaiian Airlines but the order was cancelled and Abramovich bought it from Boeing and refitted it to his own requirements by Andrew Winch, who designed the interior and exterior. The aircraft was estimated in 2016 to cost US$300 million and its interior is reported to include a 30-seat dining room, a boardroom, master bedrooms, luxury bathrooms with showers, and a spacious living room. The aircraft has the same air missile avoidance system as Air Force One.

The Boeing 777, commonly referred to as the Triple Seven, is an American long-range wide-body airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It is the world's largest twinjet. The 777 was designed to bridge the gap between Boeing's other wide body airplanes, the twin-engined 767 and quad-engined 747, and to replace older DC-10s and L-1011 trijets. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, with a first meeting in January 1990, the program was launched in October, with an order from United Airlines. The Boeing 737 is a narrow-body aircraft produced by Boeing at its Renton Factory in Washington. Developed to supplement the Boeing 727 on short and thin routes, the twinjet retains the 707 fuselage width and six abreast seating with two underwing turbofans. Envisioned in 1964, the initial 737-100 made its first flight in April 1967 and entered service in February 1968 with Lufthansa. The lengthened 737-200 entered service in April 1968, and evolved through four generations, offering several variants for 85 to 215 passengers.

Boeing Business Jets (BBJ) are versions of Boeing's jet airliners with modifications to serve the private, head of state and corporate jet market. In 1996, Phil Condit, president of The Boeing Company, and Jack Welch, chairman and CEO of General Electric, sketched out their ideal business jet– a high-performance derivative of the 737 Next Generation, capable of flying more than 6,000 nautical miles nonstop and offering more cabin space than traditional long-range business jets. The first BBJ, based on the 737-700, rolled out on July 26, 1998 and had its first flight Sept. 4, 1998.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">21 Squadron SAAF</span> Military unit

21 Squadron SAAF is a squadron of the South African Air Force. It was formed as a bomber squadron in Kenya during World War II and became a VIP transport squadron in the 1960s, a role which it performs to this day. The squadron currently flies two Dassault Falcon 50s, two Cessna Citation Is, a Dassault Falcon 900 and a Boeing BBJ aircraft. 21 Squadron is one of the most active squadrons in the air force with 606 VIP transport flights being made between 2009 and 2012. The Boeing BBJ is used as the presidential aircraft when the President of South Africa travels.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Boeing 747-8</span> Wide-body airliner, last production series of the 747

The Boeing 747-8 is a wide-body airliner formerly developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and the largest variant of the 747. After introducing the 747-400, Boeing considered larger 747 versions as alternatives to the proposed double-deck Airbus A3XX, later developed as the A380. The stretched 747 Advanced was launched as the 747-8 on November 14, 2005, for a market forecast of 300 aircraft. The first 747-8F Freighter performed its maiden flight on February 8, 2010, and the passenger 747-8I Intercontinental followed suit on March 20, 2011. The cargo version was first delivered in October 2011 and the airliner began commercial service in June 2012.

Air transports for heads of state and government are, in many countries, provided by the air force in specially equipped airliners or business jets. One such aircraft in particular has become part of popular culture: Air Force One, used by the President of the United States and operated by the United States Air Force. Phocea was a sailing yacht that was built at Toulon, France, by DCAN in 1976. She is 246 feet long and can cruise at 12 knots. Like many yachts, she has undergone a number of refits, a major one having been in 2000 in Germany. She can handle 12 guests supported by a crew of 16 sailors. Phocea is a schooner with four masts. Phocea was originally built for speed, and she crossed the Atlantic in 8 days and achieved speeds of 30 knots under sail. The yacht has also been converted more for luxury and used on the charter market.

Airbus Corporate Jets, a business unit of Airbus SAS and part of Airbus, markets and completes corporate jet variants from the parent's airliner range. Types include the A318 Elite to the double/triple-decked Airbus A380 Prestige. Following the entry of the 737 based Boeing Business Jet, Airbus joined the business jet market with the A319 Corporate Jet in 1997. Although the term Airbus Corporate jet was initially used only for the A319CJ, it is now often used for all models, including the VIP widebodies. As of June 2019, 213 corporate and private jets are operating; 222 aircraft have been ordered, including 128 A320 family jets.

Motor Yacht A is a superyacht designed by Philippe Starck and engineered by naval architect Martin Francis. It was built by the Blohm + Voss shipyard at the HDW deepwater facility in Kiel. It was ordered in November 2004, and delivered in 2008 at a rumoured cost of US$300 million. With a length of 119 metres (390 ft) and measuring almost 6,000 tonnes, it is one of the largest motor yachts in the world. It is owned by Russian entrepreneur and industrialist Andrey Melnichenko.

It also publishes annual books, including TheSuperyachts, a compendium of some of the biggest and best superyacht launches from the last year.

<i>Azzam</i> (2013 yacht) Private super yacht

Azzam is a private super yacht built by German shipyard Lürssen Yachts. Azzam was launched on 5 April 2013. At 180 metres (590 ft) in length, it is the longest private motor yacht in the world. It has a beam of 20.8 metres (68 ft) and an unusually shallow draft of 4.3 m. The yacht was delivered on 9 September 2013.

The Boeing 777X is the latest series of the long-range, wide-body, twin-engine jetliners in the Boeing 777 family from Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The 777X features new GE9X engines, new composite wings with folding wingtips, greater cabin width and seating capacity, and technologies from the Boeing 787. The 777X was launched in November 2013 with two variants: the 777-8 and the 777-9. The 777-8 provides seating for 384 passengers and has a range of 8,730 nmi (16,170 km) while the 777-9 has seating for 426 passengers and a range of over 7,285 nmi (13,500 km).

Inkwazi is a Boeing Business Jet aircraft used as the air transportation for the President of South Africa and operated by 21 Squadron South African Air Force. It has seating for six ministers and ten significant others. It cost R300m to acquire and another R108m to fit and decorate the interior which can seat up to 15 passengers. The jet's name means "fish eagle" in Zulu.

<i>Madame Gu</i>

Madame Gu is a superyacht built in 2013 at the Dutch Feadship yard in Makkum. She was built as Project Dream. Madame Gu is designed by Andrew Winch Designs, who were responsible for both interior and exterior, opting for contemporary details in a classical style. Naval architecture was done by De Voogt Naval Architects.

The 62.40 m (204.7 ft) superyacht Sea & Us was launched by Amels Holland B.V. at their yard in Vlissingen. She was designed by Tim Heywood, and the interior design was created by Winch Design. She has two sister ships, the 2013 built Event and the 2015 built Madame Kate.
