The women's individual archery event at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held from 5 to 13 August at the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One of four archery events as part of the 2016 Olympic catalogue of sports, it was the fourteenth time a women's individual competition was contested as a discipline at the Olympic Games. Forty different nations qualified for the event, sending a total of sixty-four archers to compete. The defending Olympic champion was Ki Bo-bae of South Korea.

Patrick Huston is a British two-time Olympian archer from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He captured three world championship titles under the youth level, and eventually competed as a member of the two person archery squad of Team GB at the 2016 Summer Olympics, in Rio, losing the first round match to the eventual champion Ku Bon-chan of South Korea. In the Tokyo 2020 Olympics his best result was a men's team 5th. Huston currently lives near Lilleshall National Sporting Centre and trained full-time under senior national coach Richard Priestman for Archery UK, while remaining a loyal founding member of East Belfast Archery Club. He captured the men's team recurve title, alongside his compatriots Juan René Serrano and Luis Álvarez, in a historic final match against the United States at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, and eventually competed as a lone male archer at the 2016 Summer Olympics, ending his run in an immediate departure from the initial round.

A member of Brazil's archery squad in three editions of the Pan American Games, and at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Nikitin scored her only career medal with a bronze over Venezuela's Leidys Brito in the women's individual recurve tournament at the 2014 South American Games in Santiago, Chile. Nikitin currently trains under the tutelage of head coach Evandro Azevedo for the Brazilian national squad, while shooting at a local archery range in her native São Paulo.

The Case Evaldo Rosa, also known as the Case of the 80 gunshots, refers to the homicide of musician Evaldo Rosa dos Santos and recyclable material collector Luciano Macedo, which occurred on April 7, 2019, in the city of Rio de Janeiro. At 2:40 pm (BRT), Evaldo was driving a Ford Ka with five occupants down Camboatá Road when Brazilian Army soldiers opened fire. Evaldo was shot and died on the spot. Passenger Sérgio Gonçalves was wounded and Luciano, who was passing by and tried to help, was also shot and died eleven days later. The occupants of the vehicle and witnesses stated that the soldiers started firing abruptly, from behind, without any previous signaling or warning, and did not stop firing even after the musician's pregnant wife and son left the car. According to the Judicial Military Police, the military fired 257 rifle shots. 62 pierced the car.
