Angela Galea (born May 5, 1983) is a Maltese former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. [2] She is a two-time Olympian (2000 and 2004), a three-time champion at the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE), and a multiple-time Maltese record holder in both freestyle and butterfly (50, 100, and 200 m). In preparation for her Games, she was trained for the Italian Olympic team, under the guidance of head coach Maurizio Cocconi. [1]
Galea made her first Maltese team, as a 17-year-old teen, at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Swimming in heat one of the women's 100 m butterfly, she posted a Maltese record of 1:07.88 to pick up a second seed and forty-sixth overall against Swaziland's Lisa de la Motte and Micronesia's Tracy Ann Route. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Galea qualified again for the 100 m butterfly by receiving a Universality place from FINA. [1] She lowered a Maltese record and posted her entry time of 1:03.62 from GSSE in Valletta, held a year before the Olympics. [5] [6] She participated in the same heat as Sydney against five other swimmers, including 16-year-old Kateryna Zubkova of Ukraine. Despite a good recovery in the last 50 metres, Galea came up short in fourth place with a time of 1:05.47, just a 3.25-second margin behind winner Zubkova. Galea failed to advance into the semifinals, as she placed thirty-sixth overall on the first day of preliminaries. [6] [7] [8]

Elizabeth Mary Coster is a New Zealand former swimmer, who specialises in backstroke and butterfly events. She helped the New Zealand team to pull off a fourth-place effort and broke a New Zealand record of 4:06.30 in the medley relay at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
Gülşah Günenç is a Turkish former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. She represented Turkey in two editions of the Olympic Games. She broke two Turkish national records in both 100 and 200 m butterfly at the 2006 FINA World Championships (SC). Gunenc is also a member of the swimming team for Galatasaray Sports Club in her native Istanbul, and for the Buckeyes at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
Mariya Bugakova is an Uzbekistani former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly and sprint freestyle events. She represented Uzbekistan at three editions of the Olympic Games. She is also the elder sister of backstroke swimmer and two-time Olympian Danil Bugakov. Bugakova is a law school graduate at the Tashkent State University of Economics.
Ravil Nachaev is an Uzbek former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. He is a three-time Olympian, and a gold medalist in the 50 m freestyle at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea.
Maria Papadopoulou is a Cypriot former swimmer who specialized in butterfly events. She set a Cypriot record of 1:01.67 to earn a bronze medal in the 100 m butterfly at the 2001 Mediterranean Games in Tunis, Tunisia.
Shim Min-ji is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. She is a two-time Olympian and a three-time relay medalist at the Asian Games (2002).
Nicholas Rees is a Bahamian former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. He is a two-time Olympian, a former Caribbean and Bahamian record holder in the 100 m butterfly, a varsity swimmer for the Ohio State Buckeyes, and a graduate of business administration at Ohio State University. Rees later obtained an MBA in International Business from the University of Miami. Nicholas Rees is also the grandson of Lionel Wilmot Brabazon Rees, VC, British war hero, Victoria Cross recipient and advisor to the Crown.
Daniel O'Keeffe is a Guamanian former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. He is a two-time Olympian, and currently holds a Guamanian record in the 100-meter butterfly (55.05).
Conrad Anthony Francis is a Sri Lankan former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. He is a two-time Olympian, a three-time swimmer at the Commonwealth Games, and a double gold medalist in the 50 and 100 m butterfly at the Asian Age Group Championships. Francis also became the first Sri Lankan to swim the same stroke under 56 seconds, when he competed at the 2004 FINA World Short Course Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Angela Dawn Chuck is a Jamaican former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. She won a total of two medals, gold in the 200 m freestyle (2:07.81), and bronze in the 100 m freestyle (58.91), at the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador, El Salvador. Chuck is a two-time Olympian and a psychology graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
Pilin Tachakittiranan is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. She is a two-time Olympian and a multiple-time age-group record holder in all freestyle distances. Regarded as Thailand's top female swimmer, she has won a total of five gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games.
Kolbrún Ýr Kristjánsdóttir is a retired Icelandic swimmer, who specialized in backstroke and butterfly events. She is a two-time Olympian, and former Icelandic record holder in the same strokes.
Imaday Núñez González is a Cuban former swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. She won a total of three medals in the breaststroke and medley relay at the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
Chonlathorn Vorathamrong is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She is a two-time Olympian and a six-time medalist at the Southeast Asian Games.
Diego Mularoni is a Sammarinese former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a three-time Olympian, and a current Sammarinese record holder in the 100, 200, 400, and 1500 m freestyle since 2001. He has won a total of 13 medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe.
Tracy Ann Route is a Micronesian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. She is a two-time Olympian, and holds numerous Pacific age group records in the freestyle and butterfly. She was the first woman to represent the Federated States of Micronesia at the Olympics.
Kathryn Evans is an English former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games. Evans specialised in freestyle and individual medley events. She is a two-time Olympian, and a double British champion in the 200 m individual medley. Evans also played for Nova Centurion Swim Club in Nottingham, under head coach Bill Furniss. Evans is the cousin of late rower Acer Nethercott, who competed in the men's eight at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Siobhan Trichelle Cropper is a 2-time Olympian and swimmer from Trinidad and Tobago, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Cropper represented Trinidad and Tobago in two editions of the Olympic Games, and eventually captured the 100 m butterfly title at the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She also holds three Trinidadian records in a sprint freestyle and butterfly double, two NCAA championship titles and fourteen All-American honors, while attending Stanford University.
Lisa de la Motte is a Swazi former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. De la Motte competed for Swaziland in the women's 100 m butterfly at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She received a ticket from FINA, under a Universality program, in an entry time of 1:08.86. She participated in heat one against two other swimmers Angela Galea of Malta and Tracy Ann Route of Micronesia. Coming from second at the final turn, she edged out Galea on the final stretch to pick up a top seed in a Swazi record of 1:06.70. De la Motte's effortless triumph was not enough to put her through to the semifinals, as she placed forty-fifth overall on the first day of prelims.
