Anglo-Eastern is a ship management company, with over 700 ships under third-party management. [1] The company was formed by an August 2015 merger between Anglo-Eastern and Hong Kong-based Univan. As of November 2018, it was the largest ship manager in the world (by number of ships), and the second largest in the world (by number of seafarers). [2]

History

Peter Nash established Anglo-Eastern in 1974, initially as a chartering and ship owning organization, with Anglo-Eastern Management Services being the in-house manager of the ships. The latter was the start of the present Anglo-Eastern Group. A 1998 management buyout and a subsequent merger with an established UK ship manager, Denholm Ship Management in 2001, established the present Anglo-Eastern Group as an independent, global ship manager. [3] In May 2012, the company entered a partnership agreement with the Teekay group, assisting them with crew management and training. [4]

By September 2013, Anglo-Eastern was managing more than 450 vessels, consisting mostly of container ships, bulk carriers and tankers (crude oil, product and chemical), heavy lift vessels (owned by Dockwise—a Dutch company) and a few general cargo and RoRo vessels. In August 2015, Anglo-Eastern merged with Univan Group and was renamed Anglo-Eastern Univan Group, with a combined total of almost 24,000 employees, and combined third party management of nearly 600 ships. Offices

Since April 2020, Anglo-Eastern has had its head office in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong, where it occupies three floors in Kingston International Centre, 19 Wang Chiu Road. Additionally, the company has more than 25 locations across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas, including but not limited to Singapore, Mumbai, Manila, Antwerp, Hamburg, Goes, Glasgow, Odesa and London. [5] It employs more than 32,000 seafarers from multiple countries, with a majority of its seafarers coming from India, Philippines, Ukraine, Latvia and China. It also has one of the largest maritime training centres in India, located in Mumbai (also Delhi), a large cadet training academy in nearby Karjat (Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy), and additional training centres in Odesa, Manila and mainland China. International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) sets minimum qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships and large yachts. STCW was adopted in 1978 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) conference in London, and entered into force in 1984. The Convention was significantly amended in 1995 and 2010 entered into force on 1 January 2012.

The Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) is a non-stock, non-profit maritime higher educational institution which is owned, developed and operated by the Associated Marine Officers' and Seamen's Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP). Univan Ship Management Limited is a global Ship Management company, headquartered in Hong Kong. It is amongst the top 10 third party ship management companies globally. Univan has offices in India, Philippines, China, Dubai and Japan, and other agents all over the world. Univan also has a large training facility in India with expansive infrastructure for cadet and STCW training courses. Its simulators are considered to be one of the most modern simulators globally.

EXMAR Ship Management is a Belgian registered maritime company. It was established in 1991 as part of the shipping activities of the Compagnie Maritime Belge group. Compangnie Maritime Belge was established in 1895 as a diversified shipping group with its headquarters in Antwerp, Belgium. When the CMB shareholders decided on the de-merger of the company by spinning off its Gas Transport Business into a new Belgian listed public limited liability company, EXMAR Shipmanagement NV became a full affiliate of Exmar NV.

Harindarpal Singh Banga, known as Harry Banga, is an Indian entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of The Caravel Group Limited, a global conglomerate engaged primarily in resources trading, the provision of maritime services, and asset management. The Caravel Group Ltd owns Fleet Management Limited, a renowned ship management company, of which Harry Banga is also Chairman.

Maritime resource management (MRM) or bridge resource management (BRM) is a set of human factors and soft skills training aimed at the maritime industry. The MRM training programme was launched in 1993 – at that time under the name bridge resource management – and aims at preventing accidents at sea caused by human error.
