Anil Gote is an Indian politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly, twice elected for the BJP from Dhule City. He spent four years in jail charged with counterfeiting, but has never been convicted.

Political career

A former journalist, Gote entered the Legislative Assembly in 1999 as a Samajwadi Janata Party candidate, and was part of an attempt to divide the Congress party and weaken the government of the time. [1] He was elected as a BJP Assembly member for Dhule in 2009, and was re-elected in October 2014 with a reduced majority. [2]

On 30 March 2017, Gote demanded that the Maharashtra Legislative Council be scrapped on the basis that the council has no constitutional rights. [3] The opposition parties demanded action be taken against Gote for his remarks.

After that, he chose to become a part of the Indian National Congress.

Counterfeiting allegation

In connection with an alleged scheme also involving Abdul Karim Telgi for printing and sale of counterfeit stamps and stamp papers, Gote was arrested in July 2003 and placed in custody at the Yerwada Central Jail in Pune. [4] [5] He was released on bail in June 2007 under a surety of Rs 10 lakh, while the other accused, Suryavanshi, was released on surety of Rs 50,000. [6] The Bombay High Court rejected his application for discharge in 2011, [5] but by October 2014 he had not been convicted of the charges. [1]

Fodder Scam Embezzlement scandal in Bihar state, India

The Fodder Scam was a corruption scandal that involved the embezzlement of about 9.4 billion from the government treasury(which was theft by Lalu Prasad Yadav) of the eastern Indian state of Bihar. Among those implicated in the theft and arrested were then Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, as well as former Chief Minister, Jagannath Mishra. The scandal led to the end of Lalu's reign as Chief Minister. Dr. Dineshwar Prasad Sharma is also alleged to have received ₹300.60 crores from S. N. Sinha. On 23 December 2017, Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted by a special CBI court while Jagannath Misra was acquitted.

Supreme Court of India, in its judgement dated 10 July 2013 while disposing the Lily Thomas v. The Jalgaon housing scam, sometimes called the Jalgaon Gharkul scam, refers to a financial scam that took place in the city of Jalgaon in Maharashtra, India, involving the illicit diverting of approximately 110 crore in loaned public municipal funds, that were earmarked for a 1996-initiated project for the building of over 11,000 units of subsidized housing to benefit the area's rural poor population, and to reduce the prevalence of slums. The incident is considered the largest known scam in the history of North Maharashtra.
