Anthony Heilbut (born November 22, 1940) is an American writer, and a Grammy Award winning record producer of gospel music. He is noted for his biography of Thomas Mann, and is also a two-time recipient of the Grand Prix du Disque.
Anthony Heilbut, the son of German Jewish refugees Bertha and Otto Heilbut, was born in New York. He received his Ph.D. in English from Harvard University when he was 25. For the next ten years he taught, first at New York University and then at Hunter College. Since 1976 he has been a full-time writer and record producer. [1]
Heilbut’s first book, The Gospel Sound: Good News and Bad Times, was published in 1971 and has been updated several times since then; a “25th Anniversary Edition” appeared in 1997. [2]

It’s a very beautiful book, with love and precision, no pity — a little like a gospel song ... I didn’t know that anybody knew that much about it, or cared that much, or could be so tough and lucid.

Exiled in Paradise: German Refugee Artists and Intellectuals in America from the 1930s to the Present was published in 1983 and updated in 1997. It was a finalist for Los Angeles Times Book of the Year. In 2003, a conference entitled “Exiled in Paradise” was held at Los Angeles’ Villa Aurora, the palatial residence of Lion Feuchtwanger, one of the best-known emigre writers. (Ironically Feuchtwanger's famous novel, The Oppermanns , was inspired by Otto Heilbut’s cousin Wilfrid Israel. Wilfrid, whom Christopher Isherwood called “the greatest man I ever met,” was also the inspiration for the character of Herr Landauer in Isherwood’s Goodbye to Berlin .) In 2020, the Wall Street Journal declared that it is one of “the five best books” about the emigration.
Heilbut's Thomas Mann: Eros and Literature was published in 1996. The New York Times called the book “brilliant” and “astonishing.” [3] [4] Colm Toibin in The London Review of Books called it “brilliantly perceptive,” and the London Independent called it “endlessly illuminating.” [5] In 1997, it received the Randy Shilts Award for Gay Non-Fiction from the Publishing Triangle.
He has written reviews and articles for, among others, Harper's Magazine , The New York Times Book Review , The Nation , Truthdig , The New Yorker , Dimensions , The Village Voice , The Daily Beast , The Believer , Los Angeles Times Book Review, Black Women in America, and The Encyclopedia of New York City .
Heilbut's The Fan Who Knew Too Much, a collection of cultural essays published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2012, [6] [7] ranges from Thomas Mann to the gay and lesbian influence on gospel music. [8] The book won the Deems Taylor ASCAP Award, and was chosen by Lorin Stein, editor of the Paris Review, as one of his seven recommended books of 2012. [9] The book was released in paperback by Soft Skull Press in fall 2013.
He has appeared in several documentaries including Rejoice and Shout (2011) and Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Godmother of Rock and Roll (2011).
Anthony Heilbut is well known as a record producer. [10] He has produced anthologies of jazz, country music, white gospel, and even opera (50 Great Moments in Opera has sold over 700,000 albums), but his specialty is black gospel music. Among his productions, How I Got Over (Columbia) by Mahalia Jackson won both a Grammy Award and a Grand Prix du Disque; Prayer Changes Things (Atlantic) by Marion Williams won a Grand Prix du Disque; and Precious Lord: The Great Gospel Songs of Thomas A. Dorsey (Sony) was the first gospel album to be included in the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
Heilbut has produced albums for many labels. Since 1987 he has been the president, sole producer, literary editor, and janitor of Spirit Feel Records, which is distributed by Shanachie Records. He jokes that the critical reception has been “as full-throated as a gospel solo.” Ten Spirit Feel albums have received five-star reviews from Rolling Stone . The magazine even called Marion Williams, Heilbut's most heralded artist, “the greatest singer ever.” Thanks largely to her recordings for Spirit Feel, Williams received both the MacArthur Genius Award and the Kennedy Center Honor in 1993, tragically just a few months before her death.
Other gospel acts Heilbut has produced include The Dixie Hummingbirds, Professor Alex Bradford, Dorothy Love Coates, Bessie Griffin, Reverend Claude Jeter, R. H. Harris, [11] [12] Inez Andrews, The Roberta Martin Singers, Sallie Martin, J. Robert Bradley, Robert Anderson, Willie Mae Ford Smith, [13] The Stars of Faith, and Delois Barrett Campbell. He has also produced reissues and career overviews of Edna Gallmon Cooke, The Fairfield Four, and his good friend Sister Rosetta Tharpe. He has written close to one hundred liner notes. In 2010, he produced a combination CD/DVD, How Sweet It Was: The Sights and Sounds of Traditional Gospel. In 2011, he annotated and co-produced the Aretha Franklin compilation The Great American Songbook.
Spirit Feel albums have not sold well. The photographer David Gahr once quipped, "I never heard of a label getting such great reviews and selling so few records."[ This quote needs a citation ] But, the outlook is not totally bleak. In 2005, after Marion Williams album Remember Me (Marion Williams album) was released, Heilbut was interviewed by Michele Norris on National Public Radio, and overnight, the album soared to #16 on amazon.com. Williams' Spirit Feel recordings, produced by Heilbut, have been featured in several films, most famously Fried Green Tomatoes and Mississippi Masala , as well as in the video game Scene It . As recently as January 2020, one was included in a Netflix film directed by Tyler Perry. That same month, a Spirit Feel recording of Bessie Griffin was sampled in a Beyoncé commercial. And in April 2020, Bruce Springsteen compiled a 20-song tribute to the victims of the COVID-19 coronavirus, which included Marion Williams’ Trouble So Hard— a track Heilbut composed and produced in 1990.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. She gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings, characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and electric guitar. She was the first great recording star of gospel music, and was among the first gospel musicians to appeal to rhythm and blues and rock and roll audiences, later being referred to as "the original soul sister" and "the Godmother of rock and roll". She influenced early rock-and-roll musicians including Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and also later guitarists, such as Eric Clapton.
Clara Mae Ward was an American gospel singer who achieved great artistic and commercial success during the 1940s and 1950s, as leader of the Famous Ward Singers. A gifted singer and arranger, Ward adopted the lead-switching style, previously used primarily by male gospel quartets, creating opportunities for spontaneous improvisation and vamping by each member of the group, while giving virtuoso singers such as Marion Williams the opportunity to perform the lead vocal in songs such as "Surely, God Is Able", "How I Got Over" and "Packin' Up".
James Edward Cleveland was an American gospel singer, musician, and composer. Known as the "King of Gospel," Cleveland was a driving force behind the creation of the modern gospel sound by incorporating traditional black gospel, soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs.
Willie Mae Ford Smith was an American musician and Christian evangelist instrumental in the development and spread of gospel music in the United States. She grew up singing with her family, joining a quartet with her sisters. Later she became acquainted with Thomas A. Dorsey, the "Father of Gospel Music", when he co-founded the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses in 1932. Smith started the St. Louis chapter and became the director of the national organization's Soloist's Bureau, training up and coming singers in the gospel blues style. She became known for her nurturing temperament, leading to her commonly being called "Mother Smith" by those within her musical circle. For a decade she traveled ceaselessly tutoring, singing, and preaching in churches and at revivals. Her appearances were renowned for being intensely moving spiritual experiences.

John Robert Lee Bradley was an American gospel music singer. He was the favorite singer of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was nicknamed "Mr. Baptist". Mahalia Jackson once said he had the greatest voice she had ever heard, stating "Nobody need mess with 'Amazing Grace' after Bradley gets through with it."
The Holmes Brothers were an American musical trio originally from Christchurch, Virginia. Mixing sounds from blues, soul, gospel, country, and rhythm & blues, they have released twelve studio albums, with three reaching the top five on the Billboard Blues Albums chart. They have gained a following by playing regularly at summer folk, blues, gospel, and jazz festivals. They have recorded with Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, Odetta, Phoebe Snow, Willie Nelson, Freddie Roulette, Rosanne Cash, Levon Helm and Joan Osborne, and have gigged all over the world—including performing for President Bill Clinton. They won the Blues Music Award from the Memphis-based Blues Foundation for Band of the Year in 2005 and for the Soul Blues Album of the Year in 2008.
"This Train", also known as "This Train Is Bound for Glory", is a traditional African-American gospel song first recorded in 1922. Although its origins are unknown, the song was relatively popular during the 1920s as a religious tune, and it became a gospel hit in the late 1930s for singer-guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe. After switching from acoustic to electric guitar, Tharpe released a more secular version of the song in the early 1950s.
"Didn't It Rain", sometimes given as "Oh, Didn't It Rain", is a spiritual about Noah's flood. In 1919 it appeared as sheet music in an arrangement for voice and piano by Henry Thacker Burleigh (1866–1949).
Gospel Train is a studio album by the gospel and R&B artist Sister Rosetta Tharpe. It was recorded in July 1956 and released in December the same year. Tharpe is accompanied on vocals by the traditional black gospel quartet the Harmonizing Four on some of the songs. The album was noted as part of Tharpe's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
