Old English,or Anglo-Saxon,is the earliest recorded form of the English language,spoken in England and southern and eastern Scotland in the early Middle Ages. It developed from the languages brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the mid-5th century,and the first Old English literary works date from the mid-7th century. After the Norman conquest of 1066,English was replaced,for a time,by Anglo-Norman as the language of the upper classes. This is regarded as marking the end of the Old English era,since during this period the English language was heavily influenced by Anglo-Norman,developing into a phase known now as Middle English in England and Early Scots in Scotland.

A Northumbrian cowherd who cared for the animals at the double monastery of Streonæshalch during the abbacy of St. Hilda,he was originally ignorant of "the art of song" but learned to compose one night in the course of a dream,according to the 8th-century historian Bede. He later became a zealous monk and an accomplished and inspirational Christian poet.

He is recognised as the most important Renaissance humanist in England. Florio contributed 1,149 words to the English language,placing third after Chaucer and Shakespeare,in the linguistic analysis conducted by Stanford professor John Willinsky.

Ohthere of Hålogaland was a Viking Age Norwegian seafarer known only from an account of his travels that he gave to King Alfred of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex in about 890 AD. His account was incorporated into an Old English adaptation of a Latin historical book written early in the fifth century by Paulus Orosius,called Historiarum Adversum Paganos Libri VII,or Seven Books of History Against the Pagans. The Old English version of this book is believed to have been written in Wessex in King Alfred's lifetime or soon after his death,and the earliest surviving copy is attributed to the same place and time.

Pompeo Colonna was an Italian noble,condottiero,politician,and cardinal. At the culmination of his career he was Viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples (1530–1532) for the Emperor Charles V. Born in Rome,he was the son of Girolamo Colonna,whose father Antonio was second Prince of Salerno;and Vittoria Conti,of the Conti de Poli. His family belonged to the highest rank of nobility both of the City of Rome and of the Kingdom of Naples. Pompeo and his family were hereditary supporters of the Holy Roman Empire (Ghibbelines),and they spent their careers fighting their hereditary enemies,the Orsini family,and defending and expanding their family territories and interests. He played a significant,if sometimes disruptive,role in the Conclaves of 1521 and 1523 on behalf of the Imperial interest. His family commitments and his conclave activities brought Pompeo into conflict with the second Medici pope,Clement VII,whose election he vigorously opposed,and made him a leading figure in the attempted overthrow of Pope Clement and the Sack of Rome in 1527.

The goat or domestic goat is a domesticated species of goat-antelope typically kept as livestock. It was domesticated from the wild goat of Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. The goat is a member of the animal family Bovidae and the tribe Caprini,meaning it is closely related to the sheep. There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat. It is one of the oldest domesticated species of animal,according to archaeological evidence that its earliest domestication occurred in Iran at 10,000 calibrated calendar years ago.
As an old form of art in a new country,opera came to Canada relatively late. Although the first composition can be traced back to the seventeenth century it was not until 150 years later that Canadian opera caught up. Canadian opera became especially fashionable on Canada's 1967 centennial year. These celebrations set off an interest in operas among Canadian composers that was never seen before. This interest in opera,among composers and audience alike,is noticeable until today. However,most Canadian operatic works are not known internationally since many of them specifically concern Canadian themes and are small in scale.
The decline of Celtic languages in England was the historical process by which the Celtic languages died out in what is modern-day England. It happened in most of southern Great Britain between about 400 and 1000 AD,but in Cornwall,it was finished only in the 18th century.
Haruko Momma is a philologist and a scholar of Old English literature and language. She has published on Old English poetic composition,Beowulf,philology in the nineteenth century,and teaching Old English. She is currently Professor of English at New York University.
