Anwar Hossain Manju (born 9 February 1944) [2] is a Bangladeshi politician who is a former Jatiya Sangsad member representing Pirojpur-2 constituency which consists of Kawkhali, Bhandaria and Zianagar upazilas. [3] He was elected a member of Jatiya Sangsad a total of seven times. [4] [5] He is a former Minister of Water Resources, Minister of Communications as Communications Transport and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resource.
Manju was born in the present-day Pirojpur District of Bangladesh. He is a graduate of the University of Dhaka where he completed his honors in geography with physics and mathematics. He pursued further studies in international relations at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. [6]
Manju was the minister of energy and mineral resource of Bangladesh from 1985 to 1988 under Hossain Mohammad Ershad. As Energy Minister, his achievements include the augmentation of energy generation from 700 to 2,500 megawatts, and the launching of the major public works project of the Jamuna Bridge. Hossain then served as Minister of Communications (1988–1990) for Ershad's government.
Manju was a vocal opponent of Ershad's introduction of religious references to the Constitution of Bangladesh. He objected to the declaration of Islam as the state religion of Bangladesh and warned that such an assault on secularism constitutes a slippery slope that would erode Bangladesh's successes as a progressive society. From 1996 to 2001, he served as Minister of Communications (1996–2001) in Sheikh Hasina's government. Hossain negotiated Jatiya Party's extension of support to Sheikh Hasina's party, the Awami League, to form a national government. He is Chairman of Jatiya Party (JP-Manju). He led the faction of the Jatiya Party that rejected the 1994 decision of the Party leader Ershad to align the Party with Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh National Party (BNP). He was a Presidium Member of Jatiya Party (1986–1994). [7] [8]
Manju's public service also include positions in the legislative branch of government. He served as Member of Parliament in Bangladesh for five consecutive terms. He was elected five times to Parliament in 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, and 2001 to represent the Bhandaria-Kaukhali constituency in the district of Pirojpur in the National Parliament. The mandate of the last Parliament expired in 2006, putting into place a caretaker government (CTG).
Manju served as the editor and publisher of The Daily Ittefaq from 1972 to 2007. The newspaper is the first Bangla vernacular newspaper founded by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani and Yar Mohammad Khan. Meanwhile, Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah worked as an editor. Following an agreement with the other shareholders of Ittefaq, Manju assumed the position of editor and publisher in July 2010. [9] Manju is also a businessman. His enterprise positions include founder, the Aegis Holdings Group. He is also chairman of the board, MAST Packaging Ltd. & Zenith Packaging Ltd., one of the most notable packaging firms in Bangladesh with an international clientele including the British-American Tobacco Company.
In a January 2018 cabinet reshuffle, he moved from the Ministry of Environment and Forest to become the Minister for Water Resources. [10]
In April 2007, as part of the caretaker government's anti-graft crackdown, National Board of Revenue (NBR) directed all the banks to submit transaction data of 71 individuals including Manju, his wife and his four daughters. [11] According to NBR, Manju bought a BMW using the parliamentarian membership privilege of importing duty-free cars. [12]
On 24 March 2008, Manju and his wife were charged by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information in their wealth statement. According to the complaint filed in October 2007, Manju owned property worth Tk 17.1 crore which was disproportionate to his income and he also had concealed information of wealth worth Tk 4.22 crore in the statement submitted to the ACC. Manju's wife was made an accused in the case for abetting her husband. [13]
On 26 June 2007, Manju was sentenced to five years of imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000 for possessing 21 bottles of liquor at his Dhanmondi residence. [13] Manju was sent to jail on surrender in a graft case. [14]
In August 2010, the High Court cleared the 13-year-jail term sentenced by the lower court and in November 2015, the Supreme Court upheld the decision. [15] A biographical detailed documentary film is made for Anwar Hossain Manju which is named as 'Iron Man' directed by Kamrul Hasan Nasim.
Manju is married to Tasmima Hossain and has 4 daughters - Seema Hossain, Tareen Hossain, Anushay Hossain, and Maneeza Hossain. [11] [16]
The Jatiya Party is a centre-right, conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammad Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition. Currently, it holds Rangpur out of Bangladesh's 12 city corporations.
The Jatiya Party (Manju) (Bengali: জাতীয় পার্টি (মঞ্জু), lit. 'National Party (Manju)') is a political party in Bangladesh, led by Anwar Hossain Manju. It is a splinter group of the original Jatiya Party, that was founded by the military dictator Hussain Mohammad Ershad. It broke away from the original Jatiya Party in the late 1990s when Hussain Mohammad Ershad joined the BNP and Jamaat to form the 4 party alliance. Both of its top leaders served as Ministers under HM Ershad.

Tofazzal Hossain, popularly known as Manik Miah, was a Pakistani Bengali journalist and politician. He served as the founding editor of The Daily Ittefaq. He wrote the editorial Rajnoitik Moncho. Most of his journalists were considered leftist, as Miah followed the pattern of Awami League. According to journalist and editor of Shongbad Bozlur Rahman, Awami activists followed his editorial more than any actual decision of a meeting. He was a close associate of the founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The Salanga massacre is commemorated annually in Bangladesh in memory of an event in which several hundred protesters were killed, on 27 January 1922, when fired on by British Indian police.The event, not well documented, was revived with the rediscovery in the late 20th century of "a rarely found account of Abdur Rashid titled 'Shadhinota Shangramer Rakta Shiri Salanga " which stated that thousands of people died and that the bodies were thrown into the Bangali river or buried in a mass grave.
Golui is a 2022 Bangladeshi periodical romantic film directed by SA Haque Alik and co-produced by Khorshed Alam Khosru. It has been made on the basis of the traditional boat race of rural Bengal and the life of the people of a vast village. Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu is a Bangladeshi musician, known as a rhythm composer, drummer, lyricist, and music producer. He is best known as the co-founder and Band Leader of Warfaze, a popular heavy metal and rock band from Bangladesh. Tipu has been with Warfaze for a year since its formation in 1986, providing drums play, percussion play, and rhythm composition for all eight of the band's music albums. He is also known for playing in the band “Pentagon” and “Winning” which garnered huge success. He served as the General Secretary of Bangladesh Musical Bands' Association (BAMBA) until November 2020 and has since held the position of Vice President which he still holds currently. He is also a Business Entrepreneur who is running an Advertising Agency named Carnival in Bangladesh. He was also the Partner & Production Director of Ektaar Music from 2001–2005. Later, he received an invitation from the National Skill Development Authority (NSDA) which is a Bangladesh government agency under the Prime Minister's Office responsible for developing policies to build a skilled force for different sectors of labor. Afterward, in 2018 he was given the prestigious role of director for the Creative Media Industries Skill Council Limited (CMISCL) which is an affiliated organization of the NSDA, that was reestablished in 2021. In 2020 he started a record label called Loy Records which was launched officially in December 2021 with the prime intention to promote and cultivate young talents of the country whilst encouraging them to find their own path through music so they can represent their country internationally. On 10 December 2021, he started his new journey with his own record label called "Loyy Records"
