Apollos Kaulinge

Apollos Mhani Nghilifa Kaulinge (b. 2 February 1934 Ondivandobe, Ondobe, Oukwanyama, Namibia [1] ) is a bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia.

Kaulinge is the son of Vilho Mwadikange yaKaulinge and Marta gaNdeutapo. He went to school in Ondobe during 1940–50, in Engela boys’ school during 1951–52 and in Oniipa during 1953–54 and in Ongwediva in 1955, and in Ongwediva and Oshigambo high schools during 1958–59. [1]

Kaulinge studied theology in the Elim seminary during 1960–62 and in the Lutheran Theological College in Mapumulo, Natal, South Africa, during 1963–65, where he earned a degree in 1965. He was ordained a pastor in Elim in 1962. [1]

Kaulinge was consecrated a Bishop of Eastern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) on 26 May 1996 at Oniipa, by ELCIN Presiding Bishop Kleopas Dumeni, after Dumeni was installed the Presiding Bishop of the ELCIN on that same day. Kaulinge is the founder of Students Christian Movement (SCM) in ELCIN. [2]

Kaulinge was married to Elina Eheneni yaJakob yaMwaningange yaNambandja in 1962. They have five sons and three daughters. [1]

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) is a Lutheran denomination based in Namibia. It has a total membership of over 772,398, mainly in Northern Namibia. Formerly known as the Evangelical Lutheran Ovambo-Kavango Church (ELOC), it played a significant role in opposition to Apartheid in Namibia and was part of the Namibian independence struggle.

Reverend Ngeno-Zach Nakamhela is a Namibian priest in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN). From 1992–1999, he played a prominent role in Namibian politics as General Secretary of the Council of Churches in Namibia (CCN). As head of the CCN, the Lutheran leader called for an end to the Namibia Defence Force's involvement in the Second Congo War. He was also active in campaign's for an end to domestic violence and promoting the rights of older people. In 2001, he became the pastor of an inner city congregation in Windhoek.

Lutheranism was first introduced to Angola in the late 1800s, when Finnish missionaries began working in northern Namibia and southern Angola. Following the Portuguese defeat of Mandume Ya Ndemufayo in 1917, the Lutheran church in Angola was repressed by the Roman Catholic Portuguese authorities. In 1956, Lutheranism was reestablished in Angola, and in 1991, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Angola was organized as an independent church body. In 1997, a smaller group of conservative Lutheran missionaries helped to organize a second Angolan Lutheran church: the Confessional Lutheran Church in Angola.

Nakayale, also known as Nakayale Keengulu is a village in northern Namibia near Outapi in Omusati Region situated 86km northwest of Oshakati and 4km from Outapi. It is in Anamulenge Constituency.

Haufiku Paulus Hamutenya was one of the first seven Ovambos to be ordained a pastor in Oniipa, Ovamboland, in 1925 by the director of the Finnish Missionary Society, Matti Tarkkanen.
