Kleopas Hafeni Dumeni (born 3 October 1930, Oshituku, Nakayale, Ombalantu, Namibia [1] ) is a Namibian church leader and a bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia.

Dumeni is the son of Paulus Monima yaDumeni yaHipetekwa (b. 1902) and Hileni Utumbontsezi yaShimooshili shaUpuma (b. 1909). [1]

Dumeni went to school in Oluvango from 1935–45, then in the Nakayale Primary School from 1947–50, in a vocational school in Oniipa from 1951–53, and a school in Oshigambo from 1955–56. He studied theology at the Elim Seminary during 1957–59. [1] [2]

Dumeni was consecrated a bishop by visiting Bishop Erkki Kansanaho from Tampere, Finland, in June 1979 at Ongwediva. Dumeni worked as the second bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia from 1979–1991 and as the presiding bishop from 1992 until 2000 when he retired. [1] [2]

Dumeni has an honorary doctoral degree in theology from three universities: [1]

He was also given the Wittenburg Award in 1991 by the Luther Institute, Washington, D.C. [1]

Dumeni was married to Aino yaGabriel yaHaileka in 1959. He has 5 sons and two daughters with her. [1]

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) is a Lutheran denomination based in Namibia. It has a total membership of over 853,522 in 2023, mainly in Northern Namibia. Formerly known as the Evangelical Lutheran Ovambo-Kavango Church (ELOC), it played a significant role in opposition to Apartheid in Namibia and was part of the Namibian independence struggle.

Lutheranism was first introduced to Angola in the late 1800s, when Finnish missionaries began working in northern Namibia and southern Angola. Following the Portuguese defeat of Mandume Ya Ndemufayo in 1917, the Lutheran church in Angola was repressed by the Roman Catholic Portuguese authorities. In 1956, Lutheranism was reestablished in Angola, and in 1991, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Angola was organized as an independent church body. In 1997, a smaller group of conservative Lutheran missionaries helped to organize a second Angolan Lutheran church: the Confessional Lutheran Church in Angola.

Nakayale, also known as Nakayale Keengulu is a village in northern Namibia near Outapi in Omusati Region situated 86km northwest of Oshakati and 4km from Outapi. It is in Anamulenge Constituency.

Haufiku Paulus Hamutenya was one of the first seven Ovambos to be ordained a pastor in Oniipa, Ovamboland, in 1925 by the director of the Finnish Missionary Society, Matti Tarkkanen.

Simson Teteinge Haivela Shituwa was one of the first seven Ovambo pastors, whom the director of the Finnish Missionary Society, Matti Tarkkanen ordained into priesthood in Oniipa, Ovamboland, on 27 September 1925, with a permission granted by the Bishop of Tampere, Jaakko Gummerus.

His brother Sakeus Iihuhua was also ordained at the same time.

Gideon Kagwedha Iitula was one of the first seven Ovambo pastors, whom the director of the Finnish Missionary Society, Matti Tarkkanen ordained into priesthood in Oniipa, Ovamboland, on 27 September 1925, with a permission granted by the Bishop of Tampere, Jaakko Gummerus.

Juuso Amuaalua (Hamalwa) Ngaikukwete was one of the first seven Ovambo pastors, whom the director of the Finnish Missionary Society, Matti Tarkkanen ordained into priesthood in Oniipa, Ovamboland, on 27 September 1925, with a permission granted by the Bishop of Tampere, Jaakko Gummerus.

Nabot Manasse or Nabot Shiyoma was one of the first seven Ovambo pastors, whom the director of the Finnish Missionary Society, Matti Tarkkanen ordained into priesthood in Oniipa, Ovamboland, on 27 September 1925, with a permission granted by the Bishop of Tampere, Jaakko Gummerus.

Ulla Pirkko Nenonen was a Finnish theologian, missionary with the Finnish Missionary Society and Bible translator, who served in missionary work in Namibia during a 54-year span. Of Finnish missionaries, only Martti Rautanen and his wife Frieda and daughter Johanna have served longer in the mission field.

Shekutaamba Väinö yaVäinö Nambala is a retired Bishop in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia.

Lahja Anna-Maija Lehtonen was a Finnish missionary who worked for a long time in Ovamboland, Namibia. She held a master's degree in the English language from the University of Helsinki, and she was known as the long time English teacher of the Oshigambo High School, which she co-founded together with Toivo Tirronen in 1960.

Tomas Iimbondi Shivute is a bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia. Shivute is the son of Sakaria Nehoya lyaShivute shaNdjongolo and Rauha Namunyela gweEgumbo.

Apollos Mhani Nghilifa Kaulinge is a bishop emeritus of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia.

Aino Kapewangolo is a Namibian pastor and politician. Kapewangolo is a SWAPO Party member and pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN). She served as a member of Parliament in the National Assembly from 2015-2020. She also served as a Deputy Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.
