Early life

Born on 1895 in a Mala family to Arige Balayya at Ramankole, Hyderabad State (now Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh). He also worked as ticket collector in Nizam's railways. [1]

He was follower of Achala Siddhanta and also the Brahmo Samaj. He founded Sunitha Bala Samajam and carried out social reform among the Dalits.

Movement

He worked along with Bhagya Reddy Varma, S. Venkat Rao and other activists, who organized the Dalits in the early 20th century. [2] Recognising the socio-economic backwardness of Madigas, he formed the Arundhatiya Association for their welfare.

Ramaswamy married a Madiga boy with a Mala girl, which was opposed by Bhagya Reddy Varma and the community members. [3] In 1922, he established Adi Hindu Jathoyonnathi Sabha.

Politics

Later, he joined INC and became Joint Secretary in Telangana Congress and been Minister in state govt. He was also associated with "Grandhalaya (library)" movement. [4]

He died on 23 January 1973 at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

Telugu theatre

Telugu theatre is an Indian theatre in the Telugu language, based in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Gurazada Apparao wrote the play, Kanyasulkam in 1892, which is often considered the greatest play in the Telugu language. C. Pullaiah is cited as the father of Telugu theatre movement.

Tank Bund Road

Damodaram Sanjivayya

Damodaram Sanjivayya was the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, India from 11 January 1960 to 12 March 1962. Sanjivayya was the first Dalit Chief Minister of an Indian state.

Chukka Ramaiah is an Indian educationist and member of the Telangana Legislative Council. He is famously known as "IIT Ramaiah" for teaching at IIT Study Circle, an IIT JEE coaching centre at Nallakunta, Hyderabad. He was a leading Telangana activist.

Bhagya Reddy Varma was an Indian political leader, social reformer and activist. He fought against untouchability in Hyderabad State. He also fought for abolition of Jogini and Devdasi systems.

B. Shyam Sunder

B. Shyam Sunder was born in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra State, India. His father was B. Manicham, a railway employee, and his mother Sudha Bai and had one younger sister. He was a political thinker, jurist, prolific writer, parliamentarian and a revolutionary leader. In 1937, he founded the Dalit-Muslim unity movement at Parbhani in Aurangabad, Maharashtra and urged his people to join hands with Muslims. He was a legislator representing Andhra Pradesh and Mysore State.

Pothula Vigneswara Rao spearheaded the Dalit Mala Mahanadu movement in Andhra Pradesh to fight against the categorisation of Scheduled Castes into A, B, C, D groups.

Katti Padma Rao is a Dalit poet, scholar and activist from Andhra Pradesh, India. He is the founding general secretary of Dalit Mahasabha, a people's organisation that spearheaded the Dalit movement in Andhra Pradesh in the aftermath of the 1985 Karamchedu massacre in the coastal region of that state. A scholar in both Telugu and Sanskrit, he has published several volumes of poetry, and books on sociology, religion, philosophy, history, and women's studies. He is a regular columnist in major Telugu newspapers and magazines.

Karamchedu massacre refers to an incident that occurred in Karamchedu, Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh on 17 July 1985, where brutality by Kamma landlords against Dalits resulted in the killing of six Dalits and grievous injuries to many others. Three Dalit women were raped. Hundreds of Dalits in the village were displaced from their home after their houses were burnt and looted.

Goparaju Ramachandra Lavanam, known popularly as G. Lavanam or Lavanam, was an Indian social reformer and Gandhian. He worked to remove untouchability in Indian society. He was an atheist and co-founded the Samskar institution with his wife Hemalatha Lavanam.

Bojja Tharakam was a well-known poet, writer, social and political activist and a senior human rights advocate in India. Tharakam was a committed lawyer in the Andhra Pradesh State High Court, fighting against the problems that Dalits have had to confront.

Dalit Camera is a YouTube channel set up around 2012 by Raees Mohammed to document life in India from the perspective of Dalit, Adivasi and Bahujan people and other minorities living in India. It has been described as the first use of videos uploaded on social media to highlight the difficulties faced by Dalit students. They recently announced plans of starting a website to publish news.

Swami Achhootanand,, was a poet, critic, dramatist, historian, social reformer, former Arya Samajist and founder of the Adi Hindu movement.
