Aris Thessaloniki Women's Basketball is the women's basketball department of Aris Thessaloniki, the Greek multi-sport club based in Thessaloniki. The club plays in A2 Ethniki (2nd tier) but recently it has played in A1 Ethniki. In 2015-2016 season is on the first place of the second category.

History

The women's team of Aris was founded in 1946 thanks to initiatives of Phaedon Matthaiou. Some years later, the club ceased their activities but returned in the 1980s. The season 2009-10 played in A1 Ethniki for first time and the next season played in EuroCup Women but disqualified by Dynamo Novosibirsk. [1] In season 2013-14, Aris finished in 7th place but withdrew from the championship due to financial problems and relegated to A2 Ethniki. [2]

The Super League Greece 1, or Super League 1 Stoiximan for sponsorship reasons, is the highest professional association football league in Greece. Panagiotis "Notis" Giannakis, alternatively spelled Panayiotis Yiannakis or Yannakis, is a former Greek professional basketball player and coach. As a player, he was primarily a point guard, but he could also play at the shooting guard position. During his playing career, Giannakis was also widely-known under his nickname of "O Drákos", or "The Dragon" in English.

Giorgos Sigalas, is a retired Greek professional basketball player and basketball coach. During the decade of the 1990s, the 2.01 m (6'7") tall swingman was the regular team captain of the pro club Olympiacos Piraeus, of the Greek League and the EuroLeague, and also of the Greece men's national basketball team. Nicknamed Rambo, during his playing career, Sigalas was one of the best European defensive players of his generation.

The Derby of Thessaloniki, Derby of Macedonia, or Derby of Northern Greece, is a football local rivalry between Aris and PAOK, both of which are based in Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece. Aris play their home games at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium in Charilaou district of eastern Thessaloniki, while PAOK are based at the Toumba Stadium in the neighbouring Toumba district. The two stadiums are 1.54 km apart.

Aris FC, commonly known as Aris Thessaloniki FC, AFC or simply Aris, is a Greek professional football club based in the city of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece. Created in 1914 as Aris Thessaloniki Football Club, the club was a founding member of the Macedonian Football Clubs Association, as well as the Hellenic Football Federation. The colours of the club are golden/yellow, a dominant colour in the culture of Macedonia and reminiscent of the Byzantine heritage of Thessaloniki, and black. Aleksandar Vezenkov, most commonly known as Sasha Vezenkov, is a professional basketball player for Olympiacos of the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague. He is a 2.06 m tall power forward who can also play as a small forward. Vezenkov was born in Cyprus, but due to his Bulgarian descent, he represents the Bulgarian national team. He won the Bulgarian Sportsperson of the Year award in 2022, which made him the second basketball player to win the award after Vanya Voynova in 1958. Eleftherios "Lefteris" Bochoridis is a Greek professional basketball player for Panathinaikos of the Greek Basket League and the EuroLeague. Born in Thessaloniki, Greece, he is a left-handed, 1.96 m tall combo guard.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aias Evosmou</span>

Aias Evosmou is a Greek multi-sport club based in Evosmos, Thessaloniki. It was founded in 1967 and it has departments in various sports, football, basketball and volleyball. The full name of the club is Athlitikos Politistikos Syllogos Aias Evosmou/APS Aias Evosmou. The most successful department is the women's volleyball team that plays in A1 Ethniki. The team's colours are red and white and its emblem is the ancient Greek hero Aias.

At the beginning of 2014–15 season, Aris Thessaloniki was going to play in Football League Greece as a result of the finish into the last season in the bottom of league table and the relegation. Although the team chose to play in Gamma Ethniki relieving from the huge debts it had accumulated in recent years.

The 2015–16 season was Aris Thessaloniki the second in Gamma Ethniki. The team finished 1st with a 21-point difference from the second club and was promoted to Football League, the greek second division.

Panionios Women's Basketball is the women's basketball department of Panionios GSS, the Greek multi-sport club based in Nea Smyrni. The first basketball department of the club was founded in 1919 and was one of the first in Greece. The women's department in turn was established in the post-war period. Its last reconstitution took place in the late 1990s. The club plays in A2 Ethniki but recently it has played in A1 Ethniki. They have won one Greek Championship, in 2007.
