Arsul Sani is an Indonesian politician who is currently serving as a justice of the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. He was appointed as a judge to replace Justice Wahiduddin Adams who retired in January 2024. [1]
Prior to coming to the Constitutional Court,he was the secretary-general of the United Development Party,(PPP). [2] [3] He was also a member of the People's Representative Council,sitting on the legislature's Commission III specializing in legal affairs. [4]
Via his seat on the legislature's Commission III,Sani was involved in attempts to ban black magic,a move which had proven difficult since the 1990s because banning it would require the government to acknowledge that it exists. [5] Sani also commented on the controversy surrounding the November 2016 Jakarta protests,questioning why police had financially investigated some of the protests' backers but not the financial backers of Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. [6]
Sani studied law at University of Indonesia. He continued his Master studies in communication at London School of Public Relations. Sani holds a doctoral degree from Glasgow Caledonian University. [7]

November 2016 Jakarta protests refer to an Islamist mass protest which took place on 4 November 2016 in Jakarta,Indonesia. It was attended by an estimated 50,000–200,000 protesters,and was aimed against the Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama,for alleged blasphemy of the Quran,the Islamic holy book. A counter-protest led by government officials and social activists in support of interfaith unity was led on 30 November.

February 2017 Jakarta protests refer to a series of mass protest led by Islamist movements which took place on 11 February 2017 and 21 February 2017 in Jakarta,Indonesia,and dubbed as the Action 112 and the Action 212 respectively. The protests were aimed against the incumbent governor of Jakarta Special Capital Region Basuki Tjahaja Purnama for an alleged blasphemy of the Quran,the Islamic holy book.
December 2016 Jakarta protests,also known as 212 Action,the 3rd Defend Islam Action,and the 2 December Protest,was a mass protest led by Islamist groups which took place on 2 December 2016,in Jakarta,Indonesia. During the protest,marchers demanded the termination of the gubernatorial office held by Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok),who had been accused of blasphemy. The protest was the second demonstration against Ahok in 2016 following the previous rally which took place on 4 November,and it was succeeded by the February 2017 Jakarta protests.

A series of mass protests led by students took place at major cities in Indonesia from 23 September 2019,to rally against new legislation that reduces the authority of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK),as well as several bills including a new criminal code that penalises extramarital sex and defamation against the president. The protesters consisted of mostly students from over 300 universities,with no association with any particular political parties or groups. The protests were the most prominent student movement in Indonesia since the 1998 riots that brought down the Suharto regime.
