Guntur district is one of the nine districts in the Coastal Andhra region of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The administrative seat of the district is located at Guntur, the largest city of the district in terms of area and with a population of 670,073. It has a coastline of approximately 100 km (62 mi) on the right bank of Krishna River, that separates it from Krishna district and extends till it empties into the Bay of Bengal. It is bounded on the south by Prakasam district and on the west by the state of Telangana. It has an area of 11,391 km2 (4,398 sq mi) and is the 2nd most populous district in the state, with a population of 4,889,230 as per 2011 census of India.
Guntur ; is a city and the administrative headquarters of Guntur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Located 430 km south west of state's executive capital Visakhapatnam. It is situated 40 miles (64 km) to the west of the Bay of Bengal, on the Eastern Coastal Plains. It is a municipal corporation and also the headquarters of Guntur East and Guntur West mandals in Guntur revenue division. As of 2011 census of India the city is the third most populous in the state with a population of 1,225,436. Guntur is classified as a Y-grade city as per the Seventh Central Pay Commission. It forms a part of Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor, an important industrial corridor in the country. The city is known for its chilli, cotton and tobacco exports and has the largest chilli market yard in Asia.

Earlier called as Guntur-I , it has undergone some minor changes in the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008 and was named as Guntur East as per the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008. Mohammed Mustafa Shaik is the present MLA of the constituency, who won the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from YSR Congress Party. As of 25 March 2019, there a total of 229,830 electors in the constituency.

The station was re-constructed with two new platforms, as a part of doubling and electrification works on the Tenali–Guntur section, which was commissioned on 26 April 2019. The station also has rail yard for freight trains.
