Ashley Grossman (born May 27, 1993) is a water polo player. [1] She has competed as a member of the United States women's national water polo team, for both the U.S. Junior and Senior National Teams, including as Team USA won a gold medal in water polo at the 2015 Pan American Games.
Grossman was born in Santa Monica, California, to Linda and Gerald (Gerry) Grossman. [1] [2] Her father played football for the Tufts Jumbos at Tufts University, and her mother ran track for the Milwaukee Panthers at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. [2]
Grossman attended Harvard-Westlake High School (Class of 2011), earning four letters in water polo and captain of the water polo team her final two years. [1] [2] [3] Her senior year she was named All-American, CIF Southern Section Division I Player of the Year, and Mission League MVP. [2] She competed in the 2009 and 2011 Junior World Water Polo Championships, and was named MVP of the 2010 Junior Olympics. [2] [4] In 2011, she and high school baseball player Max Fried won the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame High School Award. [5] [6] [4]
She then attended Stanford University (Class of 2014, majoring in Science, Technology and Society), and with the water polo team winning three NCAA championships. [1] [7] As a freshman in 2012, playing for the Stanford Cardinal water polo team at the 2-meter position, Grossman was Association of College Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Honorable Mention, ACWPC All-Academic - Excellent, All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Honorable Mention, and named to the MPSF All-Newcomer Team. [2] [8] As a sophomore in 2013, she was ACWPC All-Academic - Superior, and MPSF All-Academic. [2] As a junior in 2014, she was ACWPC All-America Honorable Mention, ACWPC All-Academic - Superior, All-MPSF Honorable Mention, and MPSF All-Academic. [2] As a senior in 2015, she was ACWPC First Team All-American, ACWPC All-Academic - Superior, All-NCAA Tournament First Team, All-MPSF Second Team, and MPSF All-Academic. [2] She finished her college career 10th in Stanford history, with 169 goals. [2] [8] She was the co-recipient of the Pam Strathairn Award at the Stanford Athletic Board Awards, for her competitive attitude. [7] In 2016, she was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship for her academic and athletic achievements. [7]
In both 2012 and 2014 Grossman won the NCAA Championship with Stanford University. [1] In 2013 she won a gold medal at the FINA Junior Water Polo World Championships. [1] [2] In 2014, with Team USA she won a silver medal at the FINA Women's Water Polo Intercontinental Tournament. [1] [2]
Grossman competed as a member of the United States women's national water polo team, for both the U.S. Junior and Senior National Teams. [9] [1] [2] [8] She played for Team USA in the 2015 FINA Women's Water Polo World League as it won a gold medal in June 2015, and the 2015 Pan American Games against Argentina, Cuba, and Mexico as Team USA won a gold medal in water polo at the 2015 Pan American Games in July 2015. In 2016 Grossman was inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Northern California. [15] [16] In 2017, she was inducted into the Harvard-Westlake Hall of Fame. [17]
Brenda Villa is an accomplished American water polo player. She is the most decorated athlete in the world of women’s water polo. Villa was named Female Water Polo Player of the Decade for 2000-2009 by the FINA Aquatics World Magazine. She is one of four female players who competed in water polo at four Olympics; and one of two female athletes who won four Olympic medals in water polo. She is a leading goalscorer in Olympic water polo history, with 31 goals. In 2018, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
Robin Mary Beauregard is an American water polo player, who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Beauregard plays the position of center defender.
Natalie Golda is a former American water polo player and currently the head coach of the newly formed Fresno State Bulldogs water polo team to begin competition in 2018. Considered one of the greatest women's water polo players of all time, her senior leadership helped guide the 2005 UCLA Bruins to their seventh national championship. In May 2005 Golda received the Peter J. Cutino Award, given to the best player in women's collegiate water polo. She was also a member of the US Water Polo Team that won the bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2015, she was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.
Jacqueline "Jackie" Frank DeLuca Cochran is an American water polo goalkeeper, 2004 bronze medal Olympian and two-time collegiate National Player of the Year.
Kelly Kristen Rulon is an American water polo player. She won a gold medal with the United States at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the water polo competition. She is also a bronze medalist from the 2004 Summer Olympics. Her position is driver.
Lauren Ashley Wenger is an American water polo player for the University of Southern California, who received the 2006 Peter J. Cutino Award as the best collegiate water polo player among Division I NCAA teams. Her position is two-meter defender.
Courtney Lynn Kaiulani Mathewson is an American water polo player, part of the US team that won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She played water polo for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins during their four-consecutive NCAA National Champion Women's Water Polo championships, and was named to the All-Tournament first team. At UCLA, she majored in sociology.
Jillian Amaris Kraus is a water polo player. She won a gold medal in the 2005 Junior World Championships, won four straight NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships with UCLA, and has played with the United States women's national water polo team.
Jessica Marie Steffens is an American water polo player. She was a member of the United States national teams that won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She also played at Stanford University.
Elsie Ann Windes is an American water polo player. After playing for the University of California, she joined the United States national team in 2006. She helped the U.S. win a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics and a gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Adam Wright is an American water polo player and a college water polo head coach. He was a member of the United States men's national water polo team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In the championship game, the USA team won the silver medal, defeated by Hungary.
Merrill M. Moses is a United States Olympic silver medalist, three-time Olympian, and three-time Pan American Games gold medalist water polo goalkeeper. He played college water polo for Pepperdine University, where he was an All-American and helped lead the team to the 1997 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship. Moses is now associate head coach in water polo at Pepperdine.
