Athanasios Ghavelas (born 19 December 1999) is a Greek Paralympic athlete who specializes in the 100 metres dash. He represented Greece at the Paralympic Games, along with his guide Sotiris Garaganis. [3] He was named the Best Greek male athlete with a disability of the Year for 2021 and 2023. [4] [5]

Career

Ghavelas represented Greece at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in the 100 metres T11 event and won the gold medal with a world record time of 10.82. [6] At the 2024 Summer Paralympics, in Paris, France, Ghavelas won the gold medal in the 100m (T11). [7]

Karagianni also competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. There she won a silver medal in the women's F13 long jump event and competed in the T13 100m and 200m events. In the 2012 Summer Paralympics she took the third place in F13 long jump, winning her fifth medal in the Paralympic Games. The Municipal Stadium "Anthi Karagianni" in her hometown of Kavala, Greece, was renamed in her honour in 2004.

Greece competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Greek athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games of the modern era, alongside Australia, France, Great Britain, and Switzerland. As the progenitor nation of the Olympic Games and in keeping with tradition, Greece entered first at the New National Stadium during the parade of nations at the opening ceremony.
