Andreas Thorkildsen Norwegian javelin thrower

Andreas Thorkildsen is a retired Norwegian track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He was the Olympic Champion in 2004 and 2008, European Champion in 2006 and 2010, and World Champion in 2009. He is the first male javelin thrower in history to simultaneously be European, World and Olympic Champion. He was also a three-time silver medalist at the World Championships, placing second in 2005, 2007 and 2011. His personal best of 91.59 m, set in 2006, is the Norwegian record.

The Women's Javelin Throw was one of three women's throwing events on the Athletics at the 1964 Summer Olympics program in Tokyo. It was held on 16 October 1964. 16 athletes from 10 nations entered.

Sunette Viljoen South African athlete

Sunette Stella Viljoen is a South African sportswoman who has represented her country in both cricket and athletics. In athletics, she competes as a javelin thrower and has won an Olympic silver medal and two Commonwealth Games gold medals, as well as medals in various other competitions. As a cricketer, she represented the South African national team between 2000 and 2002, including at the 2000 World Cup in New Zealand.

Al Cantello American Olympic athlete

Al Cantello is a retired American javelin thrower as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He is currently the coach of the men's distance running program at the United States Naval Academy where he has been since 1963.

The women's javelin throw field event at the 1972 Olympic Games took place on August 31 & September 1. On 11 June 1972 Ewa Gryziecka from Poland broke the javelin throw world record with a throw of 62.70m only to have Ruth Fuchs break that record on the same day with a throw of 65.06m. In 1972 Fuchs was the strong favorite heading in the Olympics. Kate Schmidt took the early lead on the first throw, but this was soon passed by the favorite on the second throw. She ended up topping her own mark two more time in rounds four and five. Fuchs would go one and set the new javelin world record in 1973, 1974 and 1976.

Kathryn Mitchell is an Australian track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. She has represented her country at two Olympic Games, finishing ninth in 2012 and sixth in 2016. She won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games with a throw of 68.92 m, a Commonwealth Games, Australian and Oceanian record. It also ranks her seventh on the world all-time list.

Javelin throw at the Olympics

The javelin throw at the Summer Olympics is one of four track and field throwing events held at the multi-sport event. The men's javelin throw has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since 1908, being the last of the current throwing events to feature at the Olympics after the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw. The women's event was first contested at the 1932 Olympics, becoming the second women's throws event after the discus in 1928.

The 1954 World Student Games were an athletics competition held in Budapest, Hungary by the Union Internationale des Étudiants (UIE). It marked a one-off departure from the athletics event being linked to the biennial World Festival of Youth and Students.

Olivia Dalila Rugama Carmona is Nicaraguan javelin thrower. She represented her nation Nicaragua at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and also registered her own national record of 55.28 metres in the women's javelin throw at the 2007 Bolivarian Games in Caracas, Venezuela. Throughout his career, Rugama was part of the team of the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua's track and field squad.

Susan Mary "Sue" Platt is a British former track and field athlete who competed for England and Great Britain in the javelin throw. She was a three-time Olympian and competed three times at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. She had a personal best of 55.60 m and was Commonwealth champion in 1962.
