Atlantic Crossing is a historical drama in the form of a television miniseries set in Norway and the United States during World War II. The series is wide-ranging but pays special attention to interactions between Crown Princess Martha of Norway and President Franklin Roosevelt during the period when Martha was a war refugee in the United States after fleeing the 1940 Nazi Invasion of Norway. [1]

Contents

Some portions with Norwegian, Danish or Swedish spoken dialogue are subtitled in English. [2] It premiered on 25 October 2020 on NRK in Norway. [3] The series premiered 4 April 2021 on Masterpiece Theatre on PBS. [4]

Production

The eight part series was co-produced by the Norwegian independent production company Cinenord, Norway’s public broadcaster NRK and the US Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). [5] Most of the series was filmed in the Czech Republic and Norway. [6]

Reception

The series created controversy in Norway by repeatedly portraying the President and the Crown Princess as romantically involved, a claim that is not supported by historical evidence.

Republicanism in Norway is a movement to replace the constitutional monarchy with a republican form of government. The country has always been ruled by a monarch and has never been a republic. Since 1905 and the dissolution of the union with Sweden several republican movements and thoughts have arisen. Currently, the Norwegian Republican Association is the only non-partisan organisation campaigning to abolish the monarchy and make Norway a republic.
