Australia competed in the 2017 Asian Winter Games in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan from 19 to 26 February. [1] [2] The event marked the debut of the country at the Asian Winter Games, however its athletes were not eligible to win any medals, as the team was classified as guest competitors. [3]
Australia's team of 30 athletes (18 men and 12 women) competed in three sports (eight disciplines). [3] [4] [5] [6] The team consisted mostly of developmental athletes, mixed with some who were expected to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. [7] [8]
Short track speed skater Deanna Lockett was the country's flagbearer during the parade of nations at the opening ceremony. [9]

The 2017 Asian Winter Games was the 8th edition of the Asian Winter Games. They were hosted in Sapporo and Obihiro in Hokkaido, Japan. These Games were originally scheduled for 2015, however, in the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly in Singapore on 3 July 2009, the committee decided to move the Games to one year before the Winter Olympics moving forward. The games began on 19 February with the opening ceremony and ended with the closing ceremony on 26 February.
Australia competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, from 7 to 23 February 2014. Australia's team consisted of 60 athletes competing in 11 sports, which represented the largest Winter Olympics team the country had ever sent.
