Authority is the fifth studio album by British electronic music group Client, released on 21 March 2014 through German electronic music label Out of Line. [1]

Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments, digital instruments and circuitry-based music technology. In general, a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means, and that produced using electronics only. Electromechanical instruments include mechanical elements, such as strings, hammers, and so on, and electric elements, such as magnetic pickups, power amplifiers and loudspeakers. Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar, which are typically made loud enough for performers and audiences to hear with an instrument amplifier and speaker cabinet. Pure electronic instruments do not have vibrating strings, hammers, or other sound-producing mechanisms. Devices such as the theremin, synthesizer, and computer can produce electronic sounds.

Client (band) English electronic music group

Client are an English electronic music group from London, formed in 2002. They are most popular in Germany where they have had limited commercial success. They typically combine airline hostess uniforms or shiny fetish fashion outfits with glamour-girl aesthetics and harsh electronics to create a sound reminiscent of early forays into electronic sound manipulation and new wave. Their uniforms have become their trademark.

Founded in 1995 out of a mail order, Out Of Line Music has grown into the leading record label for Industrial and Dark Music worldwide. Unique bands such as Hocico, Combichrist and Blutengel were signed, built up and brought into the charts by Out Of Line Music. Although Rock and Metal have been an integral part of the labels roster from the beginning, these genre started to come into a bigger focus the past years.

Background

After former singer Sarah Blackwood's (alias Client B) retreat from the band in December 2010, band leader Kate Holmes remained the only member of Client. [8] The band announced that "Kate Holmes is likely to continue with the band's activities after taking a short break" and would look out for "a brand new Client to front the band." [9]

In July 2011, Holmes introduced Xan Tyler as the new live singer of Client. Both musicians had collaborated before, forming synthpop group Technique in the late 1990s. [10] However, since Client didn't release another album any time soon after the announcement and thus didn't go on tour, the collaboration never happened. [11]

Release and promotion

Authority was released on CD and as digital download.

The first song of Authority to be released was "You Can Dance", for which the band issued a video in September 2013. Inspired by artist Maude Trout’s painting 'Death of Responsibility', the video was directed by fashion artists Vin and Omi and "reflects on the alcohol and chemical reliance associated with the dancefloor". [13] Two months later in December 2013, the track was released as limited edition vinyl single. The single contained album track "XXX Action" as b-side and three remixes of the title track. [14] Shortly before the album release in March 2014, Client followed up with single "Refuge" that also came with three remixes of the title track. The video for the single was directed by Carlos Roberti. [5] The song is "about a lifetime of making mistakes", explained band leader Holmes, "however, when one door closes another door opens." [15]

Client toured Germany in support of Authority in October 2014. [15]
