"Avalanche" is a song by American hip hop group Migos, released on June 10, 2021 as a promotional single from their fourth studio album Culture III , which was released a day later. It was produced by DJ Durel and Quavo.
Migos premiered the song on June 10, 2021 with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , in which they were dressed in matching black suits, sunglasses and fedoras and backed by a faux live band. [1] [2]
The song is built around a sample of The Temptations' cover of "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone". [3] 808s form the instrumental as well. [4] The song has no chorus; each member of the Migos raps a long verse, [3] centering on their success and extravagant lifestyles. [5] Quavo begins the song rapping about his childhood. [6] Offset and Takeoff perform the next two verses respectively. [6] The latter takes aim at rappers that copy Migos' rhyme pattern. [3] [7]
The song received generally positive reviews. Mitch Findlay of HotNewHipHop called it "a smooth drop that once again finds all three members spitting solid verses with little time for catchy hooks", also writing, "It's especially welcome to see Quavo leading by example, coming through with another strong performance after 'Straightenin.' Should he be rapping at this caliber throughout the entirety of Culture 3, fans should be in for an enjoyable ride." [8] Eddie Fu of Consequence called it "a reminder of the Atlanta trio’s lyrical dexterity". [3] Bobby Carter of NPR regarded the song to be "the perfect statement piece to open part three of the Culture trilogy". [4] Entertainment Weekly 's Danny Schwartz described it as "a delightful and unexpected risk that echoes 'Stir Fry'". [9] GQ 's Caleb Catlin wrote, "It's meant to create dramatic tension for the rest of the album, and the sample of 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone' is a little on the nose, especially when Quavo name drops it at the start of his verse. But cheesiness never hurt anyone if it's endearing. 'Avalanche' is an opening montage of sorts, showcasing Migos' greatest skills, and it makes you want to hear what else they have up their sleeve." The music video was released alongside the song. It opens with Migos arriving in a vintage Rolls-Royce at a recording studio, where they perform the song in the same manner as their Jimmy Fallon performance. Meanwhile, a fictional interview takes place throughout the video. During each of their verses, Quavo, Offset and Takeoff talk about Culture III. [6]

Migos is an American hip hop trio from Lawrenceville, Georgia, founded in 2008. The group was originally composed of Southern rappers Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset. Quavo is from Athens, Georgia; Offset and Takeoff were born and raised in Lawrenceville, Georgia. They are managed by Coach K, the former manager of Gucci Mane and Jeezy, and frequently collaborated with producers such as DJ Durel, Murda Beatz, Zaytoven, and Buddah Bless. Recognized for their contribution to trap music in the 2010s, Billboard stated that the group "influenced pop culture and the entire English language by bringing their North Atlanta roots to the mainstream".
Quavious Keyate Marshall, known professionally as Quavo, is an American rapper, singer, and actor. He is best known as the co-founder and former frontman of hip hop group Migos. Quavo is the uncle of late fellow Migos member Takeoff, and cousin of Offset. He is also a partial owner of the FCF Glacier Boyz.
Shane Lee Lindstrom, known professionally as Murda Beatz, is a Canadian record producer. He also received two Grammy Award nominations. On November 1, 2022, Ball was assassinated in Houston, Texas.
Quality Control Music is an American hip hop record label founded by Kevin "Coach K" Lee (COO) and Pierre "P" Thomas (CEO) in March 2013. Its productions were distributed through Universal Music Distribution until it was dismantled in 2015; the label's releases are now distributed through Motown and Caroline, subsidiaries of the Capitol Music Group. Tamika Howard and Simone Mitchell are executives of the label, with Howard serving as its general manager.
Culture III is the fourth studio album by American hip hop trio Migos and the last to be released during member Takeoff's lifetime.
