Avalanche Lake (Avalanchi lake) [1] is located 28 kilometers from Ooty in the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu. [2]
The lake derived the name avalanche because of a huge landslide (avalanche) that occurred in the region in the early 1800s. Avalanche received 92.1cm rain in 24 hours on 9 August 2019 which is highest 24 hr Rainfall in South India. The day before it received 82 cm in 24 hr on 8 August 2019. [1]
Avalanche Lake is an important tourism destination in the Nilgiris district. [3] The lake is surrounded by a rolling landscape with blooming flowers like magnolias, orchids and rhododendrons. Tourists can traverse beside the lake through winding paths around the lake. [1] Tourists visiting the lake can also engage themselves in Trout fishing. [4] A trout hatchery is established near the lake, from where visitors can get fishing rods and other fishing accessories required for trout fishing. [5] The lake is also used by tourists as a camp site wherein they pitch tents near the lake. Other tourist activities in the area include rafting across the lake and trekking the nearby hilly regions [6] like Upper Bhavani where there are thick forests and untouched wild habitats. [5]
Ooty, officially known as Udagamandalam, is a town and a municipality in the Nilgiris district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located 86 km north of Coimbatore and 128 km south of Mysore and is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district. It is a popular hill station located in the Nilgiri Hills. Local residents call it Queen of Hills. It is the summer capital of Madras Presidency.
The Nilgiris district is one of the 38 districts in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Government Botanical Garden is a botanical garden in Udhagamandalam, near Coimbatore (Ooty), Tamil Nadu state, India laid out in 1848. The Gardens, divided into several sections, cover an area of around 55 hectares, and lie on the lower slopes of Doddabetta peak. The garden has a terraced layout. It is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department.

Western Catchment is an area of The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, situated about 20 km from Ooty. The Western Catchment area is protected by the Forest Department, and tourists are not allowed in without permission. Azhagar Ramanujam was a Professor of Tamil language and Head of the Tamil department at Government Arts College, Ooty and a National Service Scheme Programme Officer widely noted for social activities. As the National Service Scheme Programme Officer, he led and coordinated a volunteer team of students working in the region to create awareness among the people on various social issues including health, environment protection, improvement of tourism in the region and protecting wildlife. For his social services, he was awarded the Indira Gandhi NSS Programme Officer Award for the year 2009–2010.
Mysore-Ooty Road or Mysore-Udhagamandalam Road is a tourist trail of South India starting from Mysore in Karnataka state and ending in Udhagamandalam in Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu state, India. Both routes pass through Bandipur National park in Karnataka and Mudumalai National Park in Tamil Nadu.
