Avram Avie Glazer (born October 19, 1960) is an American businessman. He is a member of the Glazer family (a son of Malcolm Glazer), who own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL) and hold a majority ownership stake in English Premier League club Manchester United.

Early life and education

Avram Avie Glazer was born on October 6, 1960 in Rochester, into a Jewish family. [1] His father is Malcolm Glazer, a billionaire, and his mother is Linda. [2] [3] He has four brothers and one sister: Kevin E. Glazer; Bryan Glazer; Joel Glazer; Darcie S. Glazer Kassewitz; and Edward S. Glazer. Glazer grew up in Rochester, New York, attended Pittsford Mendon High School and was the Junior Achievement Outstanding Young Businessman Of The Year in 1978. Glazer received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis in 1982 [4] and graduated from the Washington College of Law at American University in 1985. He also studied at the Emory University School of Law, Peking University and Fudan University in Shanghai.

Career

Since 2005, Glazer has been the Executive Co-Chairman of Manchester United. Manchester United is the world's most popular sports team with 1.1 billion fans. [5] During Glazer's tenure, Manchester United have won 25 trophies which include: five Premier League titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013), the Champions League title (2008), five League Cups (2006, 2009, 2010, 2017, 2023), two FA Cups (2016, 2023), the FIFA Club World Cup (2008), six FA Community Shield's (2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016), the Europa League title (2017), the Woman's Championship (2019), the Woman's FA Cup (2024) and two FA Youth Cups (2011, 2022). [6] [7] Manchester United was one of 12 clubs involved in the 2021 attempt to establish a European Super League. [8] [9]

Avram Glazer has been an owner of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 1995. [10] The Buccaneers have won two Super Bowls (Super Bowl XXXVII and Super Bowl LV) during the Glazers' tenure as owners. [11] [12]

In December 2023, Manchester United announced that as a result of its strategic review process, Sir Jim Ratcliffe would purchase a 25% ownership stake in Manchester United, valuing the club at $6.3 billion. [13]

From 1995 until 2009, he was also the former chairman and chief executive officer of Zapata Corporation, the energy company founded by President George H.W. Bush. [14] He was also formerly chairman and chief executive officer of both Safety Components International and Omega Protein Corporation. Philanthropy

Glazer helped fund the Glazer Children's Museum in Tampa, Florida. Glazer and his wife Jill also made possible the Glazer Family Club at Tulane University's Yulman Stadium. [15] Glazer received the Distinguished Alumni award in 2013 from Washington University in St. Louis, where he is also a member of the board of trustees. [16] Glazer was recognized with the Sigma Alpha Mu Man Of The Year Award in 2023. Avram Glazer is a member of the Board of the Glazer Vision Foundation. [17]

Personal life

Glazer is married to Jill Henkin Glazer, a Tulane University graduate and former member of its board of trustees. They live in New Orleans. [18]

The Tampa Bay area is home to many sports teams and has a substantial history of sporting activity. Most of the region's professional sports franchises use the name "Tampa Bay", which is the name of a body of water, not of any city. This is to emphasize that they represent the wider metropolitan area and not a particular municipality and was a tradition started by Tampa's first major sports team, the original Tampa Bay Rowdies, when they were founded in 1975.

The Buccaneers–Dolphins rivalry is between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). It is an in-state, interconference matchup between the two oldest NFL teams in the state of Florida. It has been active in most years since the Buccaneers joined the league as an expansion team in 1976. The rivalry is mostly a mainstay of the preseason, as the teams have been in different conferences since 1977, with the Dolphins are part of the AFC East while the Buccaneers are currently part of the NFC South. According to the current NFL scheduling format, the two teams play each other once every four years during the regular season and once every eight seasons at each team's home stadium. However, with a new 17-game schedule being introduced in 2021, it is now possible for the two teams to meet as early as every other year, depending on division placement and from the inter-conference match-ups made two years earlier. In addition, the two clubs play each other during the preseason nearly every year, with the site rotating on a mostly regular basis. The two teams have never met in the playoffs. Currently, the only circumstance in which the two teams could meet during the postseason would be in the Super Bowl.

Edward Gareth Woodward is an English accountant and investment banker who was the executive vice-chairman and effectively the chief executive of Manchester United from 2012 to 2022. Richard Arnold succeeded him in his role.

The 2021 Old Trafford protests were a series of protests against the Glazer ownership of Manchester United following the club's announcement it had joined the European Super League project that subsequently collapsed. On 2 May, fans organised protests outside Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium and the Lowry Hotel prior to the club's Premier League fixture against Liverpool.
