Career

Gebru began her athletics career as a middle-distance runner, showing early promise on the track. In 2011, she won bronze in the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Punta Umbría, Spain, before capturing gold in the 3000 metres at the African Junior Championships in Gaborone, Botswana. The following year, she recorded a personal best of 8:40.01 for the 3000 metres in Monaco. [1]

Under the guidance of coach Getamesay Molla, Gebru later transitioned to road running and the marathon distance. Her breakthrough came in 2019 when she finished fifth at the Amsterdam Marathon in 2:20:48, a lifetime best at the time. Earlier that year, she was runner-up at the Paris Marathon in 2:22:52. [2]

Gebru continued to make her mark on the international circuit. In 2024, she won the Seville Marathon in 2:22:13, setting a new course record for the event. [3] The following year, she placed third at the Berlin Marathon in 2:20:56, her fastest time since 2019, reaffirming her consistency among the world’s top marathoners. [4]
