Balajapalli Sriram Shastry (born 26 November 1950 in Akola, India) [1] is an Indian-American condensed matter physicist, specializing in strongly-correlated Fermi systems, quantum integrable systems, [2] and statistical mechanics. [3] [4]
B. Sriram Shastry graduated in 1968 with a B.Sc. from Nagpur University and in 1970 with an M.Sc. in physics from Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). He received his Ph.D. in 1976 from Mumbai's Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (T.I.F.R.), [5] where he worked with Chanchal Kumar Majumdar. [3] Shastry's doctoral dissertation, entitled Studies in the Magnetic Properties of C.P.C. and Nickel, [6] dealt with "itinerant magnetism and quantum systems in low dimensions". [5] After completing his Ph.D., he was a lecturer in physics at the University of Hyderabad. As a postdoc he worked in 1979 at Imperial College, London [3] and from 1980 to 1982 at the University of Utah, where he worked with T. Bill Sutherland on solvable models. From 1982 to 1987 Shastry worked in India at T.I.F.R. on magnetism of metals and the integrability of the 1-dimensional Hubbard model. At Princeton University he was a visiting faculty member from 1987 to 1988 and from 2000 to 2001. At Bell Laboratories from 1988 to 1994 his research included nuclear magnetic relaxation and Raman scattering in high-Tc systems. From 1994 to 2003 at the Indian Institute of Science (I.I.Sc.), he was a professor working on spin ice and superconductivity from repulsive models. Since 2003 he is a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. [5] [3]
B. Sriram Shastry was elected in 1988 a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, [2] in 1999 a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, [3] in 2000 a Fellow of The World Academy of Science (TWAS), [7] and in 2006 a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. [5] He received the 1998 TWAS award in physics. [7] In 2009 he received the Lars Onsager Prize for "pioneering work in developing and solving models of strongly correlated systems and for wide-ranging contributions to phenomenological many-body theory, which have advanced the analysis of experiments on strongly correlated materials." [5] Since 2011 he is on the scientific advisory board of the Max Planck Institute for Complex Systems in Dresden.[ citation needed ]

He is well known for his work in exactly solved models, in particular vertex models such as the six-vertex model and eight-vertex model, and the chiral Potts model and hard hexagon model. A recurring theme in the solution of such models, the Yang–Baxter equation, also known as the "star–triangle relation", is named in his honour.
Thanu Padmanabhan was an Indian theoretical physicist and cosmologist whose research spanned a wide variety of topics in gravitation, structure formation in the universe and quantum gravity. He published nearly 300 papers and reviews in international journals and ten books in these areas. He made several contributions related to the analysis and modelling of dark energy in the universe and the interpretation of gravity as an emergent phenomenon. He was a Distinguished Professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) at Pune, India.

Spenta R. Wadia is an Indian theoretical physicist with research interests in elementary particle physics, quantum field theory and statistical physics, string theory and quantum gravity. His other scientific interests are in complex systems including cross-disciplinary biology. He is a recipient of the 2004 TWAS Prize in Physics; the 1995 Physics Prize of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP); and the J. C. Bose Fellowship of the Govt of India. He is an elected member of TWAS, and a Fellow of all the Science Academies of India.

Abdel Nasser Tawfik graduated from Assiut University in 1989, where he also completed his master's degree (M.Sc.) in theoretical physics before his change to the Philipps University of Marburg, Germany, for the Dr.rer.Nat. (Ph.D.) in high energy physics. In 2012 Tawfik earned his Doctor of Science degree in mathematics and physics at the Uzbekistan National University. Dr. Tawfik is the Founder Director of the Egyptian Center For Theoretical Physics (ECTP), the Founder Director of the World Laboratory for Cosmology And Particle Physics (WLCAPP), and Research Director at the "ICSC – World Laboratory" in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, Abdel Nasser Tawfik works as Math and Physics teacher at DEO, and jointly affiliated to Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) - Goethe Frankfurt University, Germany. He is the Spokesperson of the Federation for Egyptian Particle Scientists (FEPS) and Associate of the Nuclear Physics Institute of Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences. In 1998, he was awarded the DAAD-prize for “Hervorragende Leistungen ausländischer Studierender an den deutschen Hochschulen". At the 23rd General Meeting of TWAS held in Tianjin, China, on 18 September 2012, he was elected as Fellow of TWAS. Tawfik is the author of four books, and has published about 170 research papers in leading journals.
Tiruppattur Venkatachalamurti Ramakrishnan is an Indian theoretical physicist known for his contributions in condensed matter physics. He is at present DAE Homi Bhabha Professor of Physics at Benaras Hindu University and also the chancellor of Tripura University.
Abhishek Dhar is an Indian physicist specialising in statistical physics and condensed matter physics. He is a Professor in the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, Bangalore.
V. Nagaraja is a Professor, Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He had received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in the year 1973 and 1975 from the Bangalore University. He completed his Ph.D. in 1981 from Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology at IISc and the work on mycobacteriophage I3 and role of DNA gyrase in mycobacteria set the stage for his later work when he joined the Institute as an assistant professor in 1989. After his PhD in 1981, he was a research associate at Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland (1981–85) and at Department of Biology, University of Rochester, USA(1985–89). He joined in 1989 as an assistant professor, in Centre for Genetic Engineering, IISc and was involved in setting up of the department. He became an associate professor in 1995 at Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, IISc, Professor in 2000 and served as professor and chairman of the department (2008–2013). He has been appointed president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments with effect from 14 October 2015.

He was known for his researches on semi-empirical quantum chemical theories. He was an elected fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, and all the three major Indian science academies viz. the National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1978, for his contributions to chemical sciences.
Viswanathan Kumaran is an Indian chemical engineer, rheologist and a professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his studies on stability of flow past flexible surfaces and is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 2000. A recipient of the TWAS Prize in 2014 and the Infosys Prize 2016 in the Engineering and Computer Science category, Kumaran was listed in the Asian Scientist 100, a list of top 100 scientists from Asia, by the Asian Scientist magazine.
Chanchal Kumar Majumdar was an Indian condensed matter physicist and the founder director of S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. Known for his research in quantum mechanics, Majumdar was an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies – the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian Academy of Sciences – as well a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the American Physical Society.
Shasanka Mohan Roy is an Indian quantum physicist and a Raja Ramanna fellow of the Department of Atomic Energy at the School of Physical Sciences of Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is also a former chair of the Theoretical Physics Group Committee at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Known for developing Exact Integral Equation on pion-pion dynamics, also called Roy's equations, and his work on Bell inequalities, Roy is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies – Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, and National Academy of Sciences, India – as well as The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded Roy the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to Physical Sciences in 1981.

Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India as well as The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1999.
Atish Dabholkar is an Indian theoretical physicist. He is currently the Director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) with the rank of Assistant Director-General, UNESCO. Prior to that, he was head of ICTP's High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics section, and also Directeur de Recherche at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) at Sorbonne University in the "Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Hautes Énergies" (LPTHE).
