bKL Architecture is an architecture practice in Chicago, Illinois, United States, founded in 2010 by Thomas Kerwin with the support of James Loewenberg. Practicing primarily in the United States and China, the office has locations in Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC, and Shanghai, China. [1]

Overview

bKL Architecture has completed numerous projects in Chicago, including the award-winning GEMS Lower School, a 10-story, 83,000-square-foot flagship school. [2] Additionally, the firm has completed the award-winning residential high-rise tower, [3] Coast at Lakeshore East, a 515-unit residential building with retail and amenity space located on Wacker Drive.

Postmodern architecture is a style or movement which emerged in the 1960s as a reaction against the austerity, formality, and lack of variety of modern architecture, particularly in the international style advocated by Philip Johnson and Henry-Russell Hitchcock. Lakeshore East Human settlement in Chicago, Illinois

Lakeshore East is a master-planned mixed use urban development being built by the Magellan Development Group in the Loop community area of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is located in the northeastern part of the Loop, which, along with Illinois Center, is called the New Eastside. The development is bordered by Wacker Drive to the north, Columbus Drive to the west, Lake Shore Drive to the east, and East Randolph Street to the south. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill created the master plan for the area. The development, which had been scheduled for completion in 2011, was set for completion in 2013 by 2008. Development continued with revised plans for more buildings in 2018 and continuing construction of the Vista Tower in 2019.

Lake Point Tower High-rise residential building in Chicago, Illinois

Lake Point Tower is a high-rise residential building located on a promontory of the Lake Michigan waterfront in Chicago, just north of the Chicago River at 505 North Lake Shore Drive. Completed in 1968, it is in the Streeterville neighborhood on the Near North Side. Located adjacent to Navy Pier, the building is the only skyscraper that sits east of Lake Shore Drive in the city.

César Pelli Argentine-American architect

César Pelli was an Argentine-American architect who designed some of the world's tallest buildings and other major urban landmarks. Two of his most notable buildings are the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the World Financial Center in New York City. The American Institute of Architects named him one of the ten most influential living American architects in 1991 and awarded him the AIA Gold Medal in 1995. In 2008, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat presented him with The Lynn S. Beedle Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jeanne Gang

Jeanne Gang is an American architect and the founder and leader of Studio Gang, an architecture and urban design practice with offices in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. Gang was first widely recognized for the Aqua Tower, the tallest woman-designed building in the world at the time of its completion. Aqua has since been surpassed by the nearby St. Regis Chicago, also of her design. Surface has called Gang one of Chicago's most prominent architects of her generation, and her projects have been widely awarded.

Aqua is an 82-story mixed-use residential skyscraper in the Lakeshore East development in downtown Chicago, Illinois. Designed by a team led by Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects, with James Loewenberg of Loewenberg & Associates as the Architect of Record, it includes five levels of parking below ground. The building's eighty-story, 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) base is topped by a 82,550 sq ft (7,669 m2) terrace with gardens, gazebos, pools, hot tubs, a walking/running track and a fire pit. Each floor covers approximately 16,000 sq ft (1,500 m2).

University of Illinois School of Architecture College in Illinois, U.S.

The University of Illinois School of Architecture is an academic unit within the College of Fine & Applied Arts at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The school is organized around four Program Areas - Building Performance, Detail + Fabrication, Health + Well-being, and Urbanism. Chicago firm Nagle Hartray Architecture was founded in 1966. The firm's early reputation was grounded in single-family and multi-family housing. Recent and current projects reflect diversification of the former focus, emphasizing educational, spiritual, civic, and media communication programs. Nagle Hartray has received over 75 industry design awards to date. In 2017, the firm merged with Sheehan Partners to form Sheehan Nagle Hartray Architects.

Coast at Lakeshore East

Coast at Lakeshore East, originally known as Lakeshore East Building 2-A, is a 46-story residential skyscraper in the Lakeshore East development in the Loop community area of downtown Chicago. The building is located at 345 East Wacker Drive. It is the eighth 21st century skyscraper at Lakeshore East. It is the first smoke-free residential building in Lakeshore East.

Carol Ross Barney American architect (1949 - )

Carol Ross Barney is an American architect and the founder and Design Principal of Ross Barney Architects. She became the first woman to design a federal building when commissioned as architect for the Oklahoma City Federal Building, which replaced the bombed Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Ross Barney's other projects include the JRC Synagogue, James I Swenson Civil Engineering Building, the CTA Morgan Street Station, and the Chicago Riverwalk.

St. Regis Chicago Supertall Skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A

The St. Regis Chicago, formerly Wanda Vista Tower, is a 101-story, 1,198 ft (365 m) supertall skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois. Construction started in August 2016, and was completed in 2020. Upon completion it became the city's third-tallest building at 1,198 ft (365 m), surpassing the Aon Center. It is the tallest structure in the world designed by a woman. It forms a part of the Lakeshore East development and overlooks the Chicago River near Lake Michigan.

Annie Chu FAIA is a Chinese-American architect, interior designer and academic in Los Angeles who is known for "the fusion of art and design." As a dedicated educator working across the country and abroad, Chu was recognized as a 2016 Presidential Honoree of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Distinguished Educator Award, “For me the teaching part is very important." Chu later was appointed Vice President of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Board of Directors which supports clients through a network of 15,000+ members across 58 countries. She also is recognized for design excellence, her passion, talent, and dedication in making an undeniable contribution to the city of Los Angeles. She provides a supportive voice for women designers saying "Perhaps they are more likely to listen and empathize, and to find ways to integrate responses into design and project management."

Daniel Kaven American artist and designer

Daniel Kaven is an American artist working in architecture, painting, film, writing, and photography. He is the co-founder of architecture and design studio William Kaven Architecture and the author of Architecture of Normal: The Colonization of the American Landscape.

Milam Residence House in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Milam Residence is a house in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida designed by architect Paul Rudolph, who was a founder of the Sarasota School of Architecture. The late modernist home's facade has a geometrical facade with large glass openings. The building was completed in 1961 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
