BNS Pekua is a new naval base that has been developed for the Bangladesh Navy. This is the first ever full-fledged submarine base of Bangladesh Navy. Built at a cost of $1.21 billion, the base can accommodate a total of six submarines and eight warships at a time. It will allow for safe and swift movement of the submarines in case of emergency, as the base is located at the Bay of Bengal.

History

On 3 March 2017 Ex Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of a submarine base in Pekua in the coastal city of Cox's Bazar. [1] In 2019 the construction of the base started which completed in 2023. On 20th March of the same year, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh commissioned the submarine base. [2]

Facilities

BNS Pekua is the largest submarines base in the South Asia. [3] In addition to submarines, this base also has a full-fledged naval dock where eight ships can be anchored at a time. This facility can be used for maintenance and repair of ships and also as a base for logistics and armaments. [4]

Sheikh Hasina is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She served in the position of prime minister for over 20 years, making her the longest-serving prime minister in history of Bangladesh. Thus, she became the world's longest-serving female head of government. Her authoritarian regime ended in self-imposed exile following an uprising in 2024.

It is located on 68.97 acres (27.91 ha) of land at Labanchara, Khulna, Bangladesh. It is about 45 km north from the Port of Mongla. The shipyard has the capacity to build steel / aluminium ships up to 90 m length and 700 tons lightweight. The shipyard has a slipway with a capacity to dock and undock vessels up to 700 tons lightweight and overall length of 84 meters.

Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernization program which began in 2009 and was revised in 2017. It was designed to enhance the capabilities of three service branches of Bangladesh Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. Sheikh Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad is a two star admiral of Bangladesh Navy and the current Commander of Dhaka Naval Area (COMDHAKA). Bangladesh Navy (BN) Dockyard is only naval base of the Bangladesh Navy located in Patenga, Chattagram which provides technical support to Bangladesh Navy. BN Dockyard is solely responsible for keeping operational of Bangladesh Navy warships by providing continuous repair and maintenance support through its skilled manpower and different workshops.

Maitri Setu is a 1.9-kilometre (1.2 mi) bridge on Feni River which links Sabroom in Tripura, India and Ramgarh in Chittagong, Bangladesh leading to Chittagong port, thus providing a shorter and more economical alternate land route between India's eastern and western states compared to the longer route through Assam. On 9 March 2021, it was officially opened to public by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
