BYU Center for Animation is an American animation school at Brigham Young University (BYU). The program is a leading university animation program in the United States and has collected 11 student Emmys. [1]

Contents

Students enter the program through one of two academic tracks: an animation route to graduate with a BFA in Animation or through the computer science route to graduate with a BA in Computer Science. [2] Students from the program have gone on to work at major studios including Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Blue Sky Studios, DreamWorks Animation, and Blizzard Entertainment. BYU's animation program touts 40 alumni at DreamWorks and 15 at Pixar. [3] BYU animation student Emron Grover, for example, was the digital tailor for Pixar's Coco . [4]

Ed Catmull, former president of Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios, visited BYU and remarked, "It’s the perception not just of Pixar, but also at the other studios, that something pretty remarkable is happening here." [5]

History

Architectural designer R. Brent Adams was teaching evening classes at BYU and championed the creation of a BYU animation program. Donors including Ira A. Fulton provided the funding and supercomputer to establish the program in 2010. [6] An early gift of software from Toronto-based Alias Wavefront, valued at $4 million, helped establish the department's technology base. [7]

The center now operates under the direction of three colleges including the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology, the College of Fine Arts and Communications, and the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. [8] In 2018, the BYU Center for Animation was ranked #1 of the Top 10 Animation Schools and Colleges with BS Programs by Animation Career Review. [9] Adams claims that "a high percentage of graduates of his program get hired by Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Sony and other major animation studios." [10]

Awards and notable alumni

In the program's first year it won both a Student Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and a Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The center has won 16 student Emmys and been nominated for 19 student Emmys including 2019's Grendel. [11] [12] They have also won Nickelodeon's Producers’ Choice Award and Viewers’ Choice Award, and has been invited to show at Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. [13] Dan Lemmon, Academy Award winner, was one of the early students in the BYU Center for Animation. [14]

The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was first awarded in 2002 for films released in 2001.

The Computer Animation Production System (CAPS) was a proprietary collection of software, scanning camera systems, servers, networked computer workstations, and custom desks developed by The Walt Disney Company and Pixar in the late 1980s. Although outmoded by the mid-2000s, it succeeded in reducing labor costs for ink and paint and post-production processes of traditionally animated feature films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS). It also provided an entirely new palette of digital tools to the animation filmmakers.

(2001), Up (2009), Inside Out (2015), and Soul (2020). He has been nominated for nine Oscars and has won three for Best Animated Feature—for Up, Inside Out and Soul—making him the first person in history to win the category three times. He has also been nominated for nine Annie Awards, a BAFTA Children's Film Award and a Hochi Film Award. He has described himself as a "geeky kid from Minnesota who likes to draw cartoons".

BYU TV is a television channel, founded in 2000, which is owned and operated as a part of Brigham Young University (BYU). BYU Vocal Point, or simply Vocal Point, is a seven to nine-member, male a cappella group at Brigham Young University (BYU). Founded by two students, Bob Ahlander & Dave Boyce, in 1991, Vocal Point is under the direction of former member Carson Trautman.

The main campus of Brigham Young University sits on approximately 560 acres (2.3 km2) nestled at the base of the Wasatch Mountains and includes 311 buildings. The buildings feature a wide variety of architectural styles, each building being built in the style of its time. The grounds and landscaping of the campus won first place in 2005 in America in Bloom's campus division. Furthermore, views of the Wasatch Mountains, can be seen from the campus. BYU's Harold B. Lee Library, which The Princeton Review ranked as the #1 "Great College Library" in 2004, has approximately 8½ million items in its collections, contains 98 miles (158 km) of shelving, and can seat 4,600 people. The Spencer W. Kimball Tower is home to several of the university's departments and programs and is the tallest building in Provo, Utah. Furthermore, BYU's Marriott Center, used as a basketball arena, can seat almost 18,000 and is one of the largest on-campus arenas in the nation.

<i>A Computer Animated Hand</i> 1972 American film

A Computer Animated Hand is the title of a 1972 American computer-animated short film produced by Edwin Catmull and Fred Parke. Produced during Catmull's tenure at the University of Utah, the short was created for a graduate course project. After creating a model of his left hand, 350 triangles and polygons were drawn in ink on its surface. The model was digitized from the data and laboriously animated in a three-dimensional animation program that Catmull wrote.
