Hilltop Hoods formed in 1991 when Suffa (Matthew Lambert) and MC Pressure (Daniel Smith) met at Blackwood High School. [3] DJ Next (Ben Hare) performed all of the Turntablist/DJ work for the group [4] [5] and regularly competed in the local DMC tournaments. [6]

Hooded Puppets, a short-lived live instrumental group, comprising Chris Lambert (bass), Kenny Kreuper (drums) and Lee Moore (saxophone), contribute on two tracks on the EP. [7] The Hooded Puppets performed alongside Hilltop Hoods at a number of their early performances.

The official launch concert for Back Once Again took place on Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the Lion Arts Bar in Adelaide, marking the release of the 12" vinyl EP. The event featured support acts including Sydney-based women's hip hop collective Wombmindspeak, local hip hop groups Fuglemen and Delta, as well as DJ sets by DJ Next, DJ Madcap, and DJ Dyems. Entry to the concert was $7. [8]

Australian hip hop traces its origins to the early 1980s and was initially largely inspired by hip hop and other urban musical genres from the United States. As the form matured, Australian hip hop has become a commercially viable style of music that is no longer restricted to the creative underground, with artists such as Onefour, Hilltop Hoods, Kerser and Bliss n Eso and having achieved notable fame. Australian Hip-Hop is still primarily released through independent record labels, which are often owned and operated by the artists themselves. Despite its genesis as an offshoot of American hip-hop, Australian hip hop has developed a distinct personality that reflects its evolution as an Australian musical style. Since the inception of the Australian hip-hop scene, Australian Aboriginals have played a prominent role.
