Bahlil Lahadalia (born 7 August 1976) is an Indonesian businessman and politician. He served as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources from August to October 2024. Prior to that, he served as Minister of Investment from April 2021 to August 2024, dual-hatted as head of the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), which he had served since October 2019. [1] He has served as Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources since 19 August 2024. [2] [3] [4] He is also currently the Leader of the Golkar party since 21 August 2024, replacing Airlangga Hartanto. [5]
He was born in and had most of his education in Maluku, from elementary to junior high school [6] before moving to Fak-Fak, (where his father is from) to take high school. [6] [7] He decided to study economics in Jayapura at Port Numbay Economy College, a local private college. [8] However, as he revealed during a guest lecture in University of Brawijaya, he graduated very late at age of 26 years old, as his education was interrupted due to his involvement in the May 1998 riots. [9]
During his time as a student, he was active in the Muslim Students' Association in Papua, and he eventually reached the position of General Treasurer of the National Leadership at the association. [10] [6]
Bahlil attended doctoral studies at Universitas Indonesia's Sekolah Kajian Stratejik dan Global (School of Global and Strategics Studies) until October 2024, graduating only in twenty months, the fastest doctorate granted by the school. This garnered national controversy and prompted an ethics enquiry from the university's council of professors and deans. [11]
Lahadalia is married to Sri Suparni. [12] [13] They had three sons, Muhammad Rizky Lahadalia, Muhammad Fadli, and Emir Ramadhan (born 2011). [12]
His first job was as a cake seller when he was a pre-teen. He later became a bus conductor when he was just a teenager, and eventually became a public transportation driver when he was in senior high school. [14] Years later, after he had graduated from Port Numbay, he was hired as a worker of Sucofindo, a state-run company. [14] With his friends, he later founded three companies named PT Rifa Capital, PT Bersama Papua Unggul, and PT Dwijati Sukses. [15]
He owns PT Rifa Capital Holding Company and 10 other companies, and is active mostly in the transportation and property sectors. [7]
As a businessman, at some point in time, he met Joko Widodo who was a fellow businessman at that time and befriended him. The friendship they shared was very close to the point Joko Widodo himself considered him a brother. [14]
During 2019 Indonesian presidential election, Lahadalia supported Joko Widodo for his run for second term of his presidency. He became Director of Directorate for Young Voters Raiser of the Joko Widodo - Ma'ruf Amin presidential campaign team, National Campaign Team of the Working Indonesia Coalition. [14]
For his work for Joko Widodo campaign in defending his presidency, in October 2019, he was appointed head of BKPM (Indonesian: Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal, English: Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board). [16] He was sworn in as Indonesia's first minister of investment on 28 April 2021, following the creation of the Ministry of Investment. [16] [17]
On 4 February 2022, Arifin Tasrif, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources was suddenly replaced by Lahadalia as ad interim minister for undisclosed health-related issue reason. The change is effective from 3 February 2022. [2] [3] It was later revealed that Tasrif is infected with COVID-19, and the change of the ministry is just temporary. [4]
On 1 February 2025, the now Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources implemented a policy on the restricted the sale of subsidized 3-kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Cylinders to official distributors. This policy aimed to tighten oversight and ensure that subsidies reached their intended beneficiaries. However, the abrupt change led to widespread public frustration, characterized by long queues and difficulties in accessing the cooking gas. [18] Due to this, an elderly woman died due to exhaustion, after waiting for a line to buy LPG cylinders. [19]
After this, Lahadalia received major backlash, which caused Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto instructed Minister Lahadalia to allow retailers to resume sales of the subsidized 3-kg LPG cylinders. This directive was issued on February 4, 2025, to alleviate the public's difficulties in obtaining the cooking gas. [20] Following the President's instruction, the government initiated measures to transform approximately 375,000 retailers into official sub-distribution centers. This transition aims to enhance transparency and control over the distribution system, ensuring that subsidies reach the intended recipients and preventing price manipulation. [21]
Minister Lahadalia acknowledged the public's struggles during the policy's initial implementation and extended an apology for the inconveniences caused. He emphasized the government's commitment to improving the distribution system to prevent future disruptions. [22]
