The Class 2700 locomotives are built by ABB Henschel and Adtranz of Germany under License of Electro Motive Division. [1] These 21 locomotives came to Bangladesh in 2 phases. They are-
The Class 2700 is a 1500 hp locomotive. The Electro Motive Division export model of this locomotive is GT18L-2. The wheel arrangement of this locomotive is A1A-A1A. This locomotive can achieve speeds up to 107 kilometres per hour (66 mph) with passenger trains. The Class 2700 locomotives have a similar specification to the Bangladesh Railway 2600 and 2900 class locomotives.
The Bangladesh Railway classification of this locomotive is 'M.E.L -15'. Here - M stands for meter gauge, E Stands for diesel electric, L stands for Henschel and 15 stands for locomotive horsepower (x100).
The Class 2700 locomotive can be used both for passenger services and freight services. It was highly recommended for prominent Bangladeshi trains like Subarna Express, Sonarbangla Express, Parabat Express etc. However, Class 2900 and Class 3000 are preferred by Bangladesh Railway for pulling prominent meter-gauge trains nowadays. Class 2700 pulls commuters and short-distance intercity trains.
Initially, Class 2700 locomotives were used for freight services as well. Due to several mechanical constraints, they were taken off from the freight service.
Class 2700 Locomotives are maintained in the following workshops:
An electro-diesel locomotive is a type of locomotive that can be powered either from an electricity supply or by using the onboard diesel engine. For the most part, these locomotives are built to serve regional, niche markets with a very specific purpose.
The British Rail Class 71 was an electric locomotive used on the Southern Region of British Railways. Unlike Southern Region electro-diesel locomotives they could not operate away from the electrified system.
Bangladesh Railway is the state-owned rail transport agency of Bangladesh. It operates and maintains all railways in the country, and is overseen by the Directorate General of Bangladesh Railway. The Bangladesh Railway is governed by the Ministry of Railways and the Bangladesh Railway Authority. Its reporting mark is "BR".
The B class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Victorian Railways in 1952–1953. Ordered and operated by the Victorian Railways, they initiated the dieselisation of the system and saw use on both passenger and freight services, with many remaining in service today, both in preserved and revenue service. Some were rebuilt as the V/Line A class, while others have been scrapped.
The S class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Victorian Railways between 1957 and 1961.
T41 was a type of diesel-electric locomotive used by Swedish State Railways between 1956 and 1988 for secondary line services and later for shunting. It was built by Nydquist & Holm (NOHAB), who produced five locomotives under licence from General Motors Electro-Motive Division.
The GM class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Commonwealth Railways in several batches between 1951 and 1967. As of January 2014, some remain in service with Aurizon and Southern Shorthaul Railroad.
The Spoornet Class 38-000 of 1992 is a South African electro-diesel locomotive.
The South African Railways Class 61-000 of 1959 was a diesel-hydraulic locomotive.
The South African Railways Class 37-000 of 1981 is a mainline diesel-electric locomotive.
The Indian locomotive class WDM-4 is a class of diesel-electric locomotive that was developed in 1962 by Electro-Motive Diesel for Indian Railways. The model name stands for broad gauge (W), Diesel (D), Mixed traffic (M) engine, 4th generation (4). They entered service in 1962. A total of 72 WDM-4 locomotives were built between 1961 and 1962.
Bangladesh Railway Class 2900 is, as of 2023, the most frequently used meter-gauge diesel electric locomotive of Bangladesh Railway along with Class 3000. This reliable locomotive series has been in service since 1999. Bangladesh Railway has a total 39 locomotives of this class. These 39 locomotives are being used in both passenger and freight services.
Bangladesh Railway Class 2600 is one of the most frequently used meter-gauge diesel electric locomotive classes of Bangladesh Railway. It is considered one of the strongest and most reliable locomotive classes among the fleet of Bangladesh Railway. These locomotives have been in service since 1988. Currently, Bangladesh Railway has a total of 16 locomotives of this class. These 16 locomotives are being used in both passenger services and freight services. All of them are in good condition.
Bangladesh Railway Class 2000 is the earliest meter-gauge diesel electric locomotive class of Bangladesh Railway. These locomotives have been in service since 1953 which make them the oldest running locomotives in the history of Bangladesh Railway. A total of 40 locomotives of this class were imported. After providing service for a long periods of time most of these locomotives are no longer in service. Only the serial number 2025 loco is active now.
Bangladesh Railway Class 6500 is a class of 1,676 mm gauge diesel-electric locomotives owned by Bangladesh Railway. There are 56 locomotives of this class, all manufactured by the Banaras Locomotive Works of India. All locomotives of this class are in service.
Bangladesh Railway Locomotive Class 6400 (BED-26) is a class of broad-gauge diesel-electric locomotives owned by Bangladesh Railway. Total 13 locomotives have been manufactured by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), India, 10 in 2001 as WDM-2B and 3 in 2004 as WDM-2CA. The class name stands for broad gauge (B), Diesel-electric (E), manufactured by DLW (D), engine with 26 * 100 hp (26) and numbered as 6401 - 6413. Currently all are active in service.
Bangladesh Railway Class 3000 is a class of meter-gauge diesel-electric locomotives operated by Bangladesh Railway. This is the latest and most modern meter gauge locomotive class of the Bangladesh Railway. These locos could be used on broad gauge track also by changing bogies.
The NS locomotive series 2900 is a small series of five diesel-electric locomotives that were used by the Dutch Railways between 1970 and 1974. They were taken over by the NS from the State Mines in 1970. In 1975 they were sold to FEVE in Spain. They were built in 1956–1959 by Henschel & Son in Kassel under license from the Electro-Motive Division (EMD).
