Bansuri: The Flute is a 2021 Indian Hindi-language drama film written and directed by Hari Viswanath. Produced by Mou Roychowdhury, the film stars Anurag Kashyap, Rituparna Sengupta and Upendra Limaye in major roles. [2] The film began principal photography on 25 May 2019 and the first look poster was launched by Kashyap on his Instagram page. [3] The film was released theatrically on 16 April 2021 in India. [1]

The film is based on a boy, who discovers what is running in his blood, after playing a violin, gets inspired and tries to excel like his father. [2]

After the award-winning fllm Radiopetti , [2] [5] [6] [7] director Hari Viswanath decided to make his second feature film after he had several casual talk with few members who were a part of 2015 Indian Panorama section of IFFI, Goa. Rituparna Sengupta [8] [9] was chosen to play the protagonist, a single mother. A meeting with Anurag Kashyap led to his casting as the leading man along with National award-winning actor Upendra Limaye. Actors Masood Akhtar and Danish Hussain were also signed to play other important roles. [2] [10]

Official filming started by the end of May 2019 and continued till end of June 2019. The film was shot entirely in dooars area of West Bengal like Aibheel, Chalsa, Jalpaiguri and Mateli with support from Goodricke tea estate. Veteran Sreekar Prasad and Tapas Nayak joined the film as editor and sound designer respectively. Debojyoti Mishra [11] composed two songs for the lyrics written by Anupam Banerjee. While Papon was a singer for one, Anweshaa sung the second song. Production designing was taken care by Jayashree lakshminarayan and Polish cinematographer Grzegorz Hartfiel was signed as the cameraman of the film.[ citation needed ]

Ranjan Ghosh is a Bengali filmmaker based out of Kolkata, India. He had risen to prominence with the release of Aparna Sen's Bengali feature film Iti Mrinalini, by becoming the first and the only screenwriter, the acclaimed actor-director had collaborated with in her illustrious career till date. With this film, Ghosh had made his screenwriting debut. He made his directorial debut in 2014 with the critically acclaimed Hrid Majharey, a Bengali feature film starring Abir Chatterjee and Raima Sen. Inspired by certain iconic plays of William Shakespeare, it was the first film in the Bengali language based on the works of the Bard and was presented as a tribute on his 450th Birth Anniversary. His second film Rongberonger Korhi was an anthology of four short films woven around the theme of money and its relationship with human beings. It featured National Award-winning actor Rituparna Sengupta, veteran cine star Chiranjeet Chakraborty, critically acclaimed actors Ritwick Chakraborty, Soham Chakraborty, Kharaj Mukherjee, Arunima Ghosh, Arjun Chakrabarty and others. It became a widely acclaimed film on release in 2018, before doing the festival rounds in Dubai, Dhaka, London, and nationally at Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. In 2019, Ghosh released his third feature film, the hugely successful Ahaa Re featuring Bangladeshi actor Arifin Shuvoo, Rituparna Sengupta, Amrita Chattopadhyay, Paran Bandopadhyay, Deepankar De, Shakuntala Barua, Bangladeshi Cinema film actor Alamgir in a special appearance as a restaurant owner. The film made it to a coveted list of 25 all-time great Asian films about food, compiled by international film web magazine Asian Movie Pulse. Ghosh's fourth feature film Mahishasur Marddini - A Night to Remember featuring his muse Rituparna Sengupta along with Saswata Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and a bunch of young theatre actors, released in 2022 and is touted as his boldest work till date in which he experiments with form and style, combining the elements of theatre and cinema. The film was screened at the Film and Television Institute of India, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Hyderabad, English and Foreign Languages University, University of Kerala, SNDT Women's University, Pondicherry University, IIT Bombay, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata and Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The Indian People's Theatre Association, Kollam District Committee, Kerala, screened the film in August 2023. Earlier, it became the first Indian feature film to screen at any theatre festival anywhere in India when it played at the 21st Habitat Theatre Festival, 2022, organized by the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Debojyoti Mishra is an Indian music director and film composer. He became popular with his minimalist classical compositions for the Hindi film Raincoat, directed by Rituparno Ghosh. He also worked on Bengali films, Chaturanga and Sesher Kobita, directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay. He composed songs for the Bengali film Autograph starring Prasenjit Chatterjee, Nandana Sen and Indraneil Sengupta.

Kanchan Mullick is an Indian Bengali film and television actor and politician. In addition to the television show Janata Express, Kanchan has also acted in movies like Mahakaal and Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona. He is also a Bengali theatre artist. He has worked in the theatre group Swapnasandhani. Mullick is an All India Trinamool Congress candidate at Uttarpara constituency in 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, and has won the seat.

Sohini Sengupta is an Indian film and theatre actress. Daughter of actor Rudraprasad Sengupta and Swatilekha Sengupta, who are also active in theatre, Sohini is one of the leading actors of the Bengali theatre group Nandikar. As a member of the group, she has worked with prominent theatre personalities such as Debshankar Halder, Sumanto Gangopadhyay and Parthapratim Deb, and was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi's 2007 Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for contributions to theatre. She also played a supporting role in Aparna Sen’s film Paromitar Ek Din (2000) for which she won the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2000 National Film Awards.

Anindita Bose is an Indian actress in Bengali-language film and television. She started her acting career in television and then moved to the big screen. In 2012 she acted in the film Bhooter Bhabishyat.

Alik Sukh is a 2013 Bengali Medical psychological thriller based on the novel Alikh Sukh by Suchitra Bhattacharya. The film is directed by the duo Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, starring Debshankar Haldar, Rituparna Sengupta and Sohini Sengupta in the lead roles. It released on 19 July 2013. Anurag Kashyap is an Indian filmmaker and actor, known for his work in Hindi cinema. After writing a television series Kabhie Kabhie (1997), Kashyap co-wrote Ram Gopal Varma's crime drama Satya (1998). He later wrote and directed a short television film, Last Train to Mahakali (1999), and made his feature film debut with the yet-unreleased film Paanch. He next directed Black Friday (2007), a film on the 1993 Bombay bombings. Its release was barred by India's Censor Board for two years, but was eventually released in 2007 to positive reviews.
