Big Brother is a Dutch reality competition television franchise created by John de Mol Jr., first broadcast in the Netherlands in 1999 and subsequently syndicated internationally. The show features contestants called "housemates" or "HouseGuests" who live together in a specially constructed house that is isolated from the outside world. The name is inspired by Big Brother from George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, and the housemates are continuously monitored during their stay in the house by live television cameras as well as personal audio microphones. Throughout the course of the competition, they are voted out until only one remains and wins the cash prize.
Big Brother 2001, also known as Big Brother 1, was the first season of the Australian reality television series Big Brother. It is based upon the Dutch series of the same name, it premiered on Network Ten on 23 April 2001 and lasted twelve weeks until the live finale on 16 July 2001. Big Brother 1 proved to be an early ratings success. In total, the season averaged 1.4 million viewers, thus making it the fourth highest rated season to date. This season aired for a total of 85 days, with evictions occurring once every week beginning with the second week. In total, fourteen Housemates competed in Big Brother 1. The original twelve entered on the first night, with two intruders entering at a later date. Ultimately, Housemate Ben Williams was later announced as the winner of the series, with Blair McDonough becoming the Runner-Up.
Big Brother South Africa, formerly known as Big Brother Mzansi, is a television series in South Africa produced by M-Net and Endemol. As of 2023, it has had a total of six seasons. Big Brother South Africa had four seasons, and a celebrity season in between. The first season aired in 2001 and the second in 2002. Four seasons were directed by Leon Coetzer and hosted by Mark Pilgrim.
Gran Hermano is the Argentine version of the international reality television franchise Big Brother produced by Endemol. The show is currently hosted by Santiago del Moro, taking over after Jorge Rial and previously Soledad Silveyra. The show first aired on 10 March 2001 on Telefe and aired seven regular and one Celebrity season until 16 April 2012. It was on hiatus for three years until 29 April 2015, when a revival of the series began airing on América TV for two seasons until 24 August 2016. After a six-year break, the show returned to Telefe for its tenth season that premiered on 17 October 2022. Gran Hermano was renewed for an eleventh season on 27 March 2023.
Való Világ is Hungary's reality show aired by RTL. ValóVilág became the most popular Hungarian reality television program ever. The show was aired in the same time slot as the localized version of Big Brother. While TV2 recorded the highest number of viewers in 2002, Való Világ 1 had an average of 1.5 million. In 2003, Való Világ 2 was a breakthrough. While it had 1.75 million viewers daily, Big Brother 2 recorded only 800,000 viewers. RTL started the third season, which was an absolute success with 2.06 million viewers daily. The first three seasons were broadcast between 2002 and 2004 but returned in November 2010 for the fourth season after years of hiatus.
