Barrhead South was once one of four railway stations in Barrhead, Renfrewshire (now East Renfrewshire), Scotland.
A new station, Balgray railway station, has been approved, near the site of the old Barrhead South station, by Network Rail in conjunction with East Renfrewshire Council. This station has a Spring 2024 construction start with opening planned for Summer/Autumn 2025. [1] The new station will be located off Balgraystone Road. The road network leading to the new station is now complete.
The station was originally part of the Paisley and Barrhead District Railway. The line was opened in 1897 and used for freight until the 1960s but none of the stations including this one opened for passenger travel.
Situated in the hills south of Barrhead, [2] it was the only side platform station on the Paisley and Barrhead District Railway. [3] It is clear from the wagons in the photograph that some railway activity took place in the area.
Recently, with housing development opening up nearby, the local council have confirmed they will be opening a station called Balgray railway station [4] at a similar location to serve both new developments at Barrhead South and also the Dams to Darnley Country Park. [5]

Kilmarnock railway station is a railway station in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The station is managed by ScotRail and is served by trains on the Glasgow South Western Line. One of the earliest railway stations in Scotland, the Kilmarnock and Troon Railway opened on 6 July 1812, until it was replaced by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway on 4 April 1843.
Lyoncross railway station was intended to be a railway station between the towns of Newton Mearns and Barrhead, Scotland as part of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway.
The Dalry and North Johnstone Line was a branch of the Glasgow and South Western Railway (G&SWR) in Renfrewshire and Ayrshire, Scotland, connecting the stations in Elderslie and Dalry via a route running parallel to the existing line built by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway. This provided additional line capacity for Ayrshire Coast and Kilmarnock services. The loop line was used for passenger services until the mid-1960s, when it was closed by the Beeching Axe. The majority of the line's trackbed has since been absorbed into the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
The Cathcart District Railway was proposed to serve the arising demand for suburban residential travel on the south side of Glasgow, Scotland. It was planned as a loop running to and from Glasgow Central station, but at first only the eastern arm, to Cathcart via Queens Park, was built, opening in 1886. The western arm was opened in 1894 and trains operated round the loop. A frequent passenger train service was operated, and there was also a limited goods and mineral operation.
The Barrhead Branch was a branch line built by the Glasgow and South Western Railway in Scotland. It connected Potterhill railway station on the south side of Paisley with a new Barrhead Central railway station. The line was sometimes known as the Barrhead Central Railway.

Netherton Goods station or Netherton Depot was a railway public freight facility located between Neilston railway station and Patterton railway station just west of the proposed site of Lyoncross railway station, East Renfrewshire, Scotland. Netherton Goods served the industrial and agricultural requirements for transportation in the vicinity, with the town of Arthurlie not far away, sitting on and near to country lanes to Neilston, Arthurlie and Barrhead. Netherton, Glanderston, Balgraystone and Dyke Farms were located nearby. Netherton Goods was close to Lyoncross Junction between the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway and the Paisley and Barrhead District Railway near Balgray Reservoir.
Dams to Darnley Country Park is a 1350 acre country park in East Renfrewshire and Glasgow, in Scotland comprising the historic greenspace between the towns of Barrhead and Newton Mearns in East Renfrewshire, and the areas of Darnley, Parkhouse and Southpark Village in south Glasgow. Being designated since 2000, it is one of the newest country parks in Scotland.

Balgray railway station is a proposed railway station that will serve communities to the south of Barrhead on the Neilston branch of the Cathcart Circle Lines. The name of the proposed new station was chosen as the station will be located next to Balgray Reservoir, part of the Dams to Darnley Country Park.
