The 2022 Asian Games, officially the 19th Asian Games and also known as Hangzhou 2022, is a continental multi-sport event currently being held from 23 September to 8 October 2023 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. The games marked the 110th anniversary since the creation of the first continental event, starting with the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games.
The water polo tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place at the Tokyo Tatsumi International Swimming Center in Kōtō. Twenty-two teams competed in the tournament, an increase of two from the previous editions. Men's Water polo was also the last final played before the closing ceremony.
The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification was the first World Cup for which teams had to qualify for under the new qualification system. The process determined 31 out of the 32 teams that participated at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification process determined 30 of the 32 teams that qualified for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. As co-hosts, the Philippines and Japan each got an automatic qualification for the tournament when they were awarded the joint hosting rights along with co-host Indonesia.
The 2022 FIBA Asia Cup qualification was a basketball competition that was played from February 2018 to August 2021, to determine the fifteen FIBA Asia-Oceania nations who would join the automatically qualified host Indonesia at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.
The qualification for the 2020 Women's Olympic Handball Tournament assigned quota places to twelve teams: the hosts, the World champion, four continental champions and six teams from the World Olympic qualification tournaments respectively. The 2020 Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Twelve teams qualified for the women's basketball at the 2020 Summer Olympics tournament. The host nation and the 2018 World Cup winner qualified. Those two teams, however, had to play in the pre-qualifying and qualifying tournaments and took one of the qualifying spots from those tournaments. The 2021 FIBA Women's Asia Cup Division A was the 29th edition of the tournament, held from 27 September to 3 October 2021 in Amman, Jordan. The tournament was originally set to be hosted by India. It served as the Asian and Oceanian qualification for the 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Australia, where the top four teams qualified for one of the qualifying tournaments.
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification for the FIBA Asia-Oceania region began in November 2021 and concluded in February 2023. The process determined the six teams that would join the automatically qualified co-hosts the Philippines and Japan at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The nation's football opener marked their return to international sport.
