Bayas Island is a small island and barangay in northeastern Iloilo, Philippines. It is part of the municipality of Estancia. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 2,316. [1] The Island was titled to Filomena Reyes Aclaro and is now shared to the locals.

Location and geography

Bayas Island is located east of Panay Island in the Visayan Sea. Nearby islands include Sicogon Island to the east, Manipulon Island to the west, Loguingot Island to the northwest, and Manlot Island to the northeast. Bayas Island is part of the Bayas Islets, which also includes Manipulon, Magosipal, and Pangalan. Of the islets, Bayas is the largest, at 216 feet (66 m). [2]

Natural disasters

Typhoon Haiyan

Typhoon Haiyan (locally known as Yolanda) passed over Bayas Island and caused heavy damage. Immediately after the typhoon, several relief groups donated materials and aid to the island. On 25 November 2013, helicopters from British aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious surveyed damage and delivered food and medical aid using the carrier's helicopters. [3] Korea-based The 601 habit donated 10 fishing boats to families in December 2013. [4] The University of the Philippines Visayas and the Canadian embassy also assisted in relief efforts. In 2014, they donated 31 fishing boats to Bayas residents. [5]

Typhoon Haiyan Pacific typhoon in 2013

Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Yolanda, was one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded. On making landfall, Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. It is one of the deadliest Philippine typhoons on record, killing at least 6,300 people in that country alone. In terms of JTWC-estimated 1-minute sustained winds, Haiyan is tied with Meranti in 2016 for being the second strongest landfalling tropical cyclone on record only behind Goni of 2020. In January 2014, bodies were still being found. Haiyan was also the most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2013.

Pan de Azucar Island (Iloilo)

Pan de Azucar, variously known as Tampisaw Island or Tambaliza, is a populated island in the Visayan Sea in the Philippines. The island is known for MountPan de Azucar a steep volcanic cone and a prominent landmark at the northern entrance of Guimaras Strait.

Islas de Gigantes

Islas de Gigantes is an island chain within the larger Western Visayas archipelago in the Visayan Sea. It is part of the municipality of Carles, Iloilo, Philippines, and the northernmost part of Iloilo province. The Gigantes islands consist of about ten islands; the two largest are Gigantes Norte and Gigantes Sur. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 12,224. There is also a lighthouse on Gigantes Norte.
