Bed of Thorns (#Tosirika) is a Ugandan, all-female crew produced drama film directed and produced by Eleanor Nabwiso under the Nabwiso Films banner. The film addresses the issue of gender-based and domestic violence. [1] [2] It stars media personality Malaika Tenshi Nnyanzi, Diana Kahunde, youtuber and social media comedian Martha Kay, Agnes Kebirungi, Michael Wawuyo Jr., Housen Mushema, Sara Kisawuzi and Patrick Salvador Idringi. In Cinema

Bed of Thorns was screened on the premier night at Century Cinemax at Acacia Mall in Kampala, at the Uganda National Cultural Centre. It screened at the London Arthouse Film Festival on 12 August 2019. [8]

Production

The film was produced by an all female crew and production started in March 2019. It was marketed with the #Tosirika (Don't keep quiet) to raise awareness about violence against women as a celebration of the women's month of March. [9] [10] The film was both Martha Kay's and Mailaika's film acting debut. [11]

Reception

The film was well received as it tackled everyday issues affecting women in relationships. In fact, after the film was released, one of the supporting actresses Diana Kahunde came out as a victim of psychological violence in her own marriage by her husband and family. [12] The film received the Africa Focus Award for Best Feature Film award at the London Arthouse Film Festival in the UK. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]

In 2020 she starred in numerous films including a thriller film The Girl in the Yellow Jumper, in a legal drama film Kafa Coh, Family Tree, and Down Hill. Veronica’s Wish is a Ugandan English-language drama film starring Nisha Kalema (Veronica), Housen Mushema (Michael), Malaika Nyanzi (Bankia) and Symon Base Kalema (Frank). It premiered in Uganda on 17 November 2018.

Nisha Kalema is a Ugandan multi-award winning actress, producer and writer. She won 3 Best Actress Awards at the Uganda Film Festival Awards in 2015, 2016 and 2018 for her roles as Grace in The Tailor, Amelia in Freedom and Veronica in Veronica's Wish respectively.

Patrick Idringi, known as Patrick Salvado, is a Ugandan comedian, actor, master of ceremonies, radio personality and engineer. He is also known as "The Arrogant Man". He was first runner up in the MultiChoice Africa organised comedy competition, Standup Uganda in 2009. He reached the semi-finals of the World's Funniest Person competition in 2016 and was nominated in 2017 and 2018 in the Savannah Comic Choice Awards as the Pan African Comic of the Year.He is also quite known for his sheer arrogance and hypocrisy

<i>Kyaddala</i> Ugandan television series

Kyaddala is a Ugandan drama television series by Reach a Hand Uganda. The first season was produced by Emmanuel Ikubese Films and Reach a Hand Uganda. Set in a present day high school life, Kyaddala a Luganda word for "It's Real", focuses on real life social issues that affect young people across Africa and their attempts to overcome those issues. The Honourables is a Ugandan political satire-drama series that premiered on NTV Uganda on 9 January 2017, starring Hellen Lukoma, Symon Base Kalema, Aisha Kyomuhangi, Philip Luswata, Malaika, Doreen Mirembe, Candy Mutesi, Patricko Mujuuka and singer Stecia Mayanja. The Uganda Film Festival Award for Best Director, also known as Feature Film of the Year, is an award presented annually by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) at the Uganda Film Festival Awards. It is given in honor of a film director who has exhibited outstanding directing while working in the film industry in Uganda. It's different from Best Feature Film which is awarded for best motion. The award was introduced in 2013 and the first winner of the award was Matt Bish for his directing work on State Research Bureau. Rehema Nanfuka became the first female director to be nominated at the Uganda Film Festival Awards in 2018 and became the first female director to win the award in Uganda.

#Family is a Ugandan sitcom created by the Nabwisos and produced at their Nabwiso Films production company. The series stars Eleanor and Matthew Nabwiso as Jackie and Frank Mpanga, the matriarch and patriarch of a middle-class Ugandan family and their daughter Molly and son Timothy. Malaika Tenshi Nnyanzi professionally known by her mononym as Malaika is a Ugandan actress, media personality, model and fashionista. She is mostly known for her radio work on the D’Mighty Breakfast show on KFM and Malaika and Oulanya on Capital Fm as well as her acting work on Veronica's Wish, Bed of Thorns, The Honourables and Mela.

The iKon Awards - Film & Television is an awarding programme that recognizes and rewards implementers and personalities in the Film and Television and Mainstream Media in Uganda and ultimately, Africa. Founded by Humphrey Nabimanya, the new annual initiative is now presented by SAUTIplus Media Hub.

Kafa Coh is a Ugandan English language legal drama directed by Gilbert K. Lukalia, produced by Doreen Mirembe at her Amani House Productions in Kampala and stars Nigerian actor Kalu Ikeagwu, Doreen Mirembe, singer, producer and actor Mariam Ndagire, Abby Mukiibi Nkaaga, Rehema Nanfuka, Vladimir Stefanov and Oyenbot. It premiered in Kampala on October 8, 2022 and showed in cinema up to October 13 of the same year.
