Eleanor Vaal Nansibo Nabwiso [1] is a Ugandan actress, producer, director and television personality. She is known for her work on The Hostel, [1] Rain, [2] Beneath the Lies - The Series and Bed of Thorns as the director. [3] She also owns a production company called Nabwiso Films which she set up together with her husband Matthew Nabwiso. [4]

Life and background

Nabwiso was born at Sir Albert Cook Mengo Hospital to a retired politician, Rev. Dr. Kefa Sempangi and Jane Frances Nakamya. [4] Nabwiso is the third of the five children. Her father, who founded the Presbyterian Church in Uganda, he was also an instrumental figure in the ministry to the street children in Uganda in 1971 under the banner of The Africa Foundation. [5]

Education

Nabwiso completed her primary education at Namagunga Girls' Primary School. She then joined Seeta High School Mukono for her O and A Levels she joined and Sikkim Manipal University where she graduated with a degree in science in IT. [1] [4]

Career

Her acting and film producing journey started when she was a teenager. During her Senior Six vacation she was picked to present a weekend program, K-Files on WBS TV. [4] She acted in The Hostel a Ugandan drama series created by Sabiiti "MMC" Moses and Emanuel "BUUBA" Egwel about the lives of university students in their hostels. She acted in Kyaddala a pan-African television drama series created by Emmanuel Ikubese for Emmanuel Ikubese Films and Reach a Hand Uganda as Bursar, #Family (Hashtag Family) TV series as Jackie Mpanga, Beneath The Lies is a Ugandan television drama-mystery series created by Nana Kagga Macpherson as Nancy, Watch Over Me as Lynnet. Bed of Thorns (#Tosirika) is a Ugandan, all-female crew produced drama film directed by her and produced at Nabwiso Films.[ citation needed ]

Awards and nominations

She won the Best Actress in TV Drama in the Uganda Film Festival Awards 2019, [6] and was nominated and won the London Arthouse Film Festivale Award, Africa Focus Award for Best Feature Film, both for the film Bed of Thorns. [3] [7] [8]

Personal life

She is married to fellow actor and singer Matthew Nabwiso and they have four children together. [9] [10]

Bed of Thorns (#Tosirika) is a Ugandan, all-female crew produced drama film directed and produced by Eleanor Nabwiso under the Nabwiso Films banner. The film addresses the issue of gender-based and domestic violence. It stars media personality Malaika Tenshi Nnyanzi, Diana Kahunde, youtuber and social media comedian Martha Kay, Agnes Kebirungi, Michael Wawuyo Jr., Housen Mushema, Sara Kisawuzi and Patrick Salvador Idringi. The film premiered on 30 March 2019 at a red carpet event at Century Cinema Kamwokya, Kampala.

94 Terror is a 2018 Ugandan war-drama film set in the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The film premiered on 14 December 2018 at a red carpet event at Theatre Labonita in Kampala and won Best Viewers' Choice Movie Award at the 2018 Uganda Film Festival Awards in the first week after the release.

<i>Kyaddala</i> Ugandan television series

Kyaddala is a Ugandan drama television series by Reach a Hand Uganda. The first season was produced by Emmanuel Ikubese Films and Reach a Hand Uganda. Set in a present day high school life, Kyaddala a Luganda word for "It's Real", focuses on real life social issues that affect young people across Africa and their attempts to overcome those issues. The series features actors and actresses from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Nigeria. Kyaddala premiered on 27 September 2019 at Kingdom Kampala.

The Honourables is a Ugandan political satire-drama series that premiered on NTV Uganda on 9 January 2017, starring Hellen Lukoma, Symon Base Kalema, Aisha Kyomuhangi, Philip Luswata, Malaika, Doreen Mirembe, Candy Mutesi, Patricko Mujuuka and singer Stecia Mayanja. The Uganda Film Festival Awards, also known as UFF Awards, are presented annually to recognize excellence in the film Industry in Uganda. The awards started in 2013 under a Uganda Communications Commission initiative to recognize and develop the Ugandan film industry. Nominated films are screened at a five-day festival that also runs training, workshops, exhibitions and outreaches. The awarding night marks the helm of the film festival that runs for three days.

The Uganda Film Festival Award for Best Director, also known as Feature Film of the Year, is an award presented annually by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) at the Uganda Film Festival Awards. It is given in honor of a film director who has exhibited outstanding directing while working in the film industry in Uganda. It's different from Best Feature Film which is awarded for best motion. The award was introduced in 2013 and the first winner of the award was Matt Bish for his directing work on State Research Bureau. Rehema Nanfuka became the first female director to be nominated at the Uganda Film Festival Awards in 2018 and became the first female director to win the award in Uganda.

#Family is a Ugandan sitcom created by the Nabwisos and produced at their Nabwiso Films production company. The series stars Eleanor and Mathew Nabwiso as Jackie and Frank Mpanga, the matriarch and patriarch of a middle-class Ugandan family and their daughter Molly and son Timothy. The series also stars Cleopatra Koheirwe as Leah and radio presenter and TV news anchor Andrew Kyamagero as Uncle Robert. It premiered on NTV Uganda on December 16, 2018.

<i>Rain</i> (2016 film) Ugandan drama film

Rain is a Ugandan 2016 drama film directed by Daniel Mugerwa, written by Mary Nyanzi and produced by Eleanor and Mathew Nabwiso. The film was released on 20 August 2016 in Kampala and stars Eleanor Nabwiso, Mathew Nabwiso, Joel Okuyo Atiku, Phillip Luswata and Joanita Bewulira. The film received numerous awards in Uganda and abroad and won Best Women’s Rights Film award at the London Eye International Festival, organised and run by London Film Network Ltd at the Terbanacle Theater in London, Best Actress in East African and Best First time Director from FESTICAB a film festival in Burundi, Best Film in Africa and Middle East award from NUREN film festival in China and Best Screenplay at Uganda Film Festival Awards in Uganda.

Milka Irene Soobya is a Ugandan actress and politician most known for her breakout role as Monica on NTV Uganda's drama series Deception and as Fifi Aripa on Power of Legacy. She contested for the Woman Member of Parliament for Jinja after Jinja received city status.

Aisha "Lady Aisha" Kyomuhangi is a Ugandan actress, singer and producer. She has starred in numerous stage productions including Kigenya Agenya. She is also a member of Bakayimbira Dramactors, one of Uganda's oldest stage drama groups.

Mathew Nabwiso, often as Matthew Nabwiso is a Ugandan actor. Nabwiso is best known for the roles in the films Imbabazi, Rain and Kyaddala. Apart from acting, he is also a singer, director and producer.

Malaika Tenshi Nnyanzi professionally known by her mononym as Malaika is a Ugandan actress, media personality, model and fashionista. She is mostly known for her radio work on the D’Mighty Breakfast show on KFM and Malaika and Oulanya on Capital Fm as well as her acting work on Veronica's Wish, Bed of Thorns, The Honourables and Mela.
