Benjamin "Ben" Polak (born 22 December 1961) is a British professor of economics and management and former Provost at Yale University. From 1999 to 2001 Polak was the Henry Kohn Associate Professor of Economics [4] [5] and is now the inaugural William C. Brainard Professor of Economics. [6] In January 2013,he became the Provost of Yale University. [7]
Polak specialises in microeconomic theory,has published 19 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals,and is Associate editor of the Journal of Economic Theory.
In 2021 it was reported that Polak was responsible for Yale's decision to terminate the Yale Boswell Editions project,founded in 1949. [8]
In fall 2007,Polak participated in the Open Yale Courses initiative,recording the 24 lecture series and making all course materials freely available on the Internet. [9] Polak describes the motivation for his participation in the scheme as delivering an Ivy League standard education to a wider audience,"It’s not the full Yale experience,unfortunately,but it’s something.”[ citation needed ]
James Tobin was an American economist who served on the Council of Economic Advisers and consulted with the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System,and taught at Harvard and Yale Universities. He contributed to the development of key ideas in the Keynesian economics of his generation and advocated government intervention in particular to stabilize output and avoid recessions. His academic work included pioneering contributions to the study of investment,monetary and fiscal policy and financial markets. He also proposed an econometric model for censored dependent variables,the well-known tobit model.
Stephen Alan "Steve" Ross was the inaugural Franco Modigliani Professor of Financial Economics at the MIT Sloan School of Management after a long career as the Sterling Professor of Economics and Finance at the Yale School of Management. He is known for initiating several important theories and models in financial economics. Leonid Hurwicz was a Polish–American economist and mathematician,known for his work in game theory and mechanism design. He originated the concept of incentive compatibility,and showed how desired outcomes can be achieved by using incentive compatible mechanism design. Hurwicz shared the 2007 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his seminal work on mechanism design. Hurwicz was one of the oldest Nobel Laureates,having received the prize at the age of 90.

Brainard is the namesake of the William C. Brainard chair,which current Yale provost Ben Polak holds. Brainard earned both his economics M.A. (1959) and Ph.D. (1963) at Yale. He has been teaching at Yale since 1962.

The 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was divided equally between the American economists Ben S. Bernanke,Douglas W. Diamond,and Philip H. Dybvig "for research on banks and financial crises" on 10 October 2022. The award was established in 1968 by an endowment "in perpetuity" from Sweden's central bank,Sveriges Riksbank,to commemorate the bank's 300th anniversary. Laureates in the Memorial Prize in Economics are selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Nobel Committee announced the reason behind their recognition,stating:
"This year's laureates in the Economic Sciences,Ben Bernanke,Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvig,have significantly improved our understanding of the role of banks in the economy,particularly during financial crises. An important finding in their research is why avoiding bank collapses is vital."
