Beth Jan Coats (born July 20, 1966) is an American former biathlete and cyclist. [1] She competed at the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 1994 Winter Olympics. [2] Coats was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and graduated from Eldorado High School. [3] She later suffered severe injuries in a climbing accident. [4]

Biography

In the 1980s, Coats went on a skiing trip in New Mexico, which resulted in her enrolling at Western State College and joining the cross-country ski team. [5] After learning how to use a .22 caliber rifle, Coats moved on to biathlon. [5] In 1993, Coats joined the National Guard, helping her to qualify to the United States Olympic team. [5]

Coats competed at two Winter Olympics, and in seven World Championships in biathlon. [1] Coats also competed professionally in mountain biking, [6] ranking tenth in the world as a professional, [5] finishing second overall in the US national championships in 1997, [1] and later became a mountain climber. [1] [7] However, while climbing in Eldorado Canyon State Park in 1998, Coats suffered a spinal cord injury during a fall, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. [1] [8] Despite suffering a spinal injury, Coats went on to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. [1] [9]

Craig Hospital is a neurorehabilitation and research hospital in Englewood, Colorado specializing in spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation and research. Craig is a 93-bed, private, not-for-profit, free-standing long-term acute care and rehabilitation hospital that provides a comprehensive system of inpatient and outpatient medical care, rehabilitation, neurosurgical rehabilitative care, and long-term follow-up services. Half of Craig's patients come from outside of Colorado each year, and in the past four years Craig has treated patients from all 50 states and several foreign countries. At any given time, the staff at Craig treats approximately 55 inpatients with spinal cord injuries, 30 with traumatic brain injuries, and 50-60 outpatients. Craig provides housing for out-of-state families and outpatients, including the first 30 days free for families of new inpatients.

Jakov Fak

Jakov Fak is a Croatia-born Slovenian biathlete competing for Slovenia since 2010. As a member of the Croatian biathlon team, Fak won bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships and at the 2010 Winter Olympics where he was also the Croatian flag bearer at the opening ceremony. In 2010, Fak switched his citizenship and started competing for Slovenia. With the Slovenian team, Fak won four medals at the World Championships, including two gold, and a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics. In addition, Fak has eight victories in the World Cup.

Michael Dixon, is a Scottish cross-country skier and biathlete. He has represented Great Britain at six Olympic Games in cross-country skiing and biathlon. He is only the seventh athlete from any country to have competed at six Winter Games and is one of fewer than fifty athletes to have competed in at least six Olympic Games.

Jaqueline Mourão is a Brazilian cyclist, biathlete, and cross-country skier. Born and raised in the mountainous city of Belo Horizonte, she only began cross-country skiing at the age of 29 and competed in a XC-Ski race for the first time in December 2005. She participated in four Winter Olympics—Torino (XC-Ski), Vancouver (XC-Ski), Sochi, and Pyeongchang (XC-Ski)—as well as in three Summer Olympics, Athens (MTB), Beijing (MTB), and Tokyo (MTB). At her fifth Olympic Games, she competed at the 2014 Sochi Olympics in both cross-country skiing and biathlon, and carried the Brazilian flag during the Opening Ceremony.
